  • Pop-up meadow camping near Betws-y-Coed in Snowdonia National Park
  • A five-minute drive to Zip World Fforest; 20 minutes to Mount Snowdon
  • Simple grass pitches by the banks of the Conwy river; walks from site
The whole of North Wales’s Snowdonia National Park is easily accessed with a stay at Popcorn Camping Betws-y-Coed. This pop-up back-to-basics campsite is on a sheltered field by the Conwy river, with spectacular views towards steep hills covered with forest. Betws-y-Coed, a mile from the site, is the epicentre of Snowdonia National Park, and is an extremely popular gateway to mountain hiking routes, as well as cyclists who like a bit of a challenge on their daily biking route. A few rules and regs: pitches are allocated on arrival, so if you’re travelling with pals, you’ll always be able to camp as a group – but please remember that quiet time is from 10.30pm until 8am, to allow fellow guests to have a decent night’s sleep. Up to two dogs are allowed per pitch (on a leash please), and there’s secure parking off the camping field. Simple facilities include hot showers (great after a long day in the open air) and a washing-up area. Barbecues are allowed next to your tent as long as they are off the ground – pick up supplies in Betws-y-Coed or head for one of the village’s many pubs or cafés if you don’t fancy cooking. There’s also a communal campfire that you are welcome to cosy up around at any time.

Local attractions

Snowdonia National Park is the star of the show in these parts, and you can access many hiking and cycling trails direct from Betws-y-Coed (five minutes’ drive). If you fancy having a day exploring around the village, you could meander along the Fairy Glen (20 minutes’ walk), or follow the Conwy river to Swallow Falls (55 minutes). Mount Snowdon is accessible on foot from Pen-y-Pass (20 minutes' drive), or you can take the leisurely route to the top of the highest mountain in Wales on the Snowdon Mountain Railway (half an hour). For more adrenaline-inducing pursuits, Zip World Fforest (five minutes) will keep speed junkies happy with zip wires and toboggan tracks – and if that’s not enough, you can always test your mettle in the caves at Zip World Llechwedd (15 minutes) and go-karts at Zip World Penrhyn Quarry (half an hour). The closest sandy beach is at Colwyn Bay (half an hour), while a little further in the car takes you to the Isle of Anglesey (45 minutes), where expansive beaches on offer include Trearddur Bay and Rhosneigr (both an hour).

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Very peaceful site surrounded by mountain from one side and river from the other side. New clean facilities, staff are very helpful. Close to tourist places, only 5 min drive to Betws y coed. Also could easily spend a day without car by exploring river or mountain.

Liked: Amazing campsite crew. Vinny and Ross were so friendly and helpful, they went out of their way to welcome us. Great location for snowdon and all the other surrounding walks and villages. Beautiful site. Good facilities.

Disliked: Expensive to rent fire pit and buy onside wood.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Hot showers and always had toilet roll! Friendly guys running the campsite, they engaged with my children too which was nice.

Disliked: I would have liked to see some hand soap in the toilets and the washing up sinks could have been cleaner, but overall these are minor issues.
