  • Small traditional working farm site in the Cambrian mountains
  • A 10-minute drive to Clywedog Reservoir; 35 minutes to Hafren Forest
  • Farm produce and drinks sold on site, and barbecues supplied
Snatch up a spot with stunning views in the midst of Mid Wales’ dark skies… A stay at Top of the Rock Glamping opens up the way for mountain biking, hiking, trail riding, fishing, paddleboarding and a host of other activities in the outdoors. This dog-friendly site is based on a small, traditional working farm in the Cambrian mountains and it’s set to impress those seeking a look into farm life… The working farm has pigs, sheep, poultry and cattle in the winter. They run a small sawmill (the milled timber is locally-sourced and used for materials on site) and press their own cider using apples from the young cider orchard. At set times, guests are welcome to meet (and sometimes feed) the pigs, lambs and poultry, as well as visit cattle in the barns during the winter months and witness the traditional cider pressing during the autumn. Hungry work? The site can supply a barbecue for you to cook dinner – and what a treat that will be, considering that they produce and sell sausages, bacon, pork, lamb, eggs, turkey and cider. The Mid Wales village of Trefeglwys is 15 minutes’ walk away for any other bits you may need. Pets are very welcome here, as long as they’re well-behaved and kept under control. All the pitches are private and not overlooked by other guests – and they come with their own firepit, shower and toilet, so you won’t have to share. What might occupy your daytime? Clywedog Reservoir’s trout fishery is around 10 minutes’ drive away, while Hafren Forest (35 minutes’ drive) has mountain biking trails, trail riding and hiking. The popular Caersws downhill tracks are 10 minutes’ drive away too. Handily, the site has buildings available to store and work on mountain bikes and motorbikes available by prior arrangement.

Shepherd's hut

Liked: Everything! The shepherd hut was perfect. Cosy, comfortable with a stunning view. We could have sat all day and stared out of the massive windows watching the lambs and the endless number of red kites that live in the area. Not to mention the sky at night when the stars were out. The owner was so friendly and made us feel very welcome. Pub was only a 10 minute walk away and the area is a haven for wildlife and beautiful walks. We will definitely be booking another visit very soon!

Non-electric grass and earth tent pitch (private bathroom amenities)

Liked: Not your average camping experience..... it's so much better! We had the most relaxing stay at 'Top of the Rock Glamping'. Such a stunning rural location on a working farm, all farm animals you would expect - pigs, sheep, goats, horses, cows and the odd Cockerell. We had a private pitch with our own water tap, compost toilet and lovely warm shower. Really friendly welcome by Guy the host who even offered to help carry some of our things, bag of logs ready for us to light the amazing firepit that is actually old farm equipment, lovely touch. Dark skies at night gave us so much opportunity to star gaze and listen to the owls. We can't wait to come back!

Disliked: Absolutely nothing!

Non-electric grass and earth tent pitch (private bathroom amenities)

Liked: Private camping area, own composting loo and excellent hot shower. We were greeted on arrival by the very friendly owner who helped us unload our heavy tent. The camping area is sheltered by an oak tree and a barn. It’s a lovely space and it’s not overlooked. We loved the flexibility of being able to pitch more than one tent. The supply of logs, a really nice touch and great fire pit out of an old tractor wheel. It’s a flattish pitch for being up a steep bank in Wales.

Disliked: This is a working farm, so not a dislike as much, as just be aware, the cockerels start crowing early - about 4:30am. If you’re a light sleeper you may want earplugs.

Non-electric grass and earth tent pitch (private bathroom amenities)

Liked: We had our own private pitch with a compost toilet, warm shower and fire pit. Guy, the owner, gave us a bag of wood and kindling free of charge and was very helpful giving us information about where we go could go to eat out (Llanidloes and a campsite about a mile away). Guy let the kids play rounders and ball games in another field too. We were in a field next to goats and their babies so we had a great time watching them. The pitch had a bit of a slope, but what you can expect from Wales. We went to the local pub which was a 15 minute walk away, they had a pool table and it was a lovely little local pub and we were made to feel welcome (despite our questionable song choices on the jukebox). We had to park a short walk away from our pitch, but Guy carried our heavy tent and gazebo to the pitch for us. Don't forget your torch, on the walk back from the pub it was pitch black and on the first night we had wonderful star gazing as it was so dark and clear. Guy was happy for my son to put his little pop up tent up as well as our beast of a tent.

Local attractions

When you’re not busy tackling the huge numbers of walking, cycling and motorbiking routes in these parts, set your sights on Clywedog Reservoir (10 minutes’ drive) for fishing, hiking or paddleboarding tuition. That’ll give you a small taste of scenic reservoir landscapes, but Elan Valley (40 minutes) has more of all that, with splendid hikes around its five reservoirs. Enough spying on the water for now… turn your attention on the sky at the Red Kite Feeding Station (half an hour). The station runs daily feedings for those who’d like to watch the birds in flight. If you ever find yourself fancying a little sand and sea, pack your beach gear for the beaches of Aberystwyth (55 minutes), Aberdyfi (55 minutes) and Morfa Borth (an hour), calling by one of Llanidloes’ (10 minutes) pubs and restaurants on the way back.
