  • Peaceful, spacious site in the Brecon Beacons National Park
  • Two pubs within walking distance
  • Stunning trail from the site to a waterfall with wild swimming
All sorts of alfresco adventures await in the Brecon Beacons National Park – and folk staying at Open Fire Camping may just surmise that they’re in a mighty fine place to make the most of them. Begin walking directly from the site along a stunning waterfall trail with wild swimming. The site is also within easy reach of heaps of other walking trails (both leisurely strolls and mountain scrambles) and can consult the site’s handy collection of maps to ensure they don’t wander astray. If wild swimming is your thing, they can also point you towards the nicest locations. It’s a cracking location to chill out in, too (excellent news for those who’ve worn themselves out by day), as there's heaps of space around the site’s different levels to find a pitch that suits you. Set up as a group or pick a more private corner from which to admire the views over Cribarth and do some stargazing by night (you’re in an International Dark Sky Reserve here so there should be some spectacular starry displays, cloud permitting). Keen to keep a calm vibe on site, the owners here have kept facilities to just the essentials like wifi, toilets and showers. Firepits have been scattered around the site, and you can buy firewood here or bring your own. If you don’t have the energy to cook dinner, there are a couple of pubs in the little Powys village of Pen-y-cae, just under a mile away.

Liked: I booked this campsite to do some hiking over Christmas. When I arrived was told they were closed... however the booking and payment had been taken some weeks before.. but Steve let me camp in any case and opened up the shower and toilet block. Very much appreciated.

Disliked: Pitchup, next time make sure you don't take booking when campsite is closed...

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Lovely plot of land, with gorgeous views and a few sheep too! Walking distance to two local pubs with hearty yummy food. Steve was an excellent host, welcoming and friendly but was more than happy to leave us to it... so we could settle in. The showers/ toilets are simple but efficient, its relatively warm inside and the showers are lovely and hot, perfect after a windy walk. If you're wanting somewhere that has a welcoming atmosphere, good location for walks and some fresh welsh air than this is the place. Thank you, Rhiannon and Mike

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Friendly and informative owner, beautiful rural setting with views across the valley and hills. Toilet block with two toilets and two hot showers, kept clean, and a small washing up sink nearer the camping. You can use fire pits and a nice communal fire place to use and meet other campers.

Disliked: Quite an intimate site, close the owners house, so felt a bit more like camping in their garden than a more remote feeling in a field, but also meant close to toilet block etc so had its upsides!

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Location- beautiful spot, fantastic scenery, close to a couple of great pubs and lovely walks. Simplicity of the pitches. Cleanliness of the basic, but more than adequate, facilities

Disliked: Longish wet grass at this time of year with dew. A couple of mown pathways would be useful- but understand this might take away from the lovely simplicity of the site!

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Open fire camping is tucked away from civilisation. It's a nice escape from the noisy roads, with sceinic views of the Brecon Beacons, which can be accompanied by a crackling, warm fire. I loved the camping set up, it made me feel at home. The hot shower was much needed after a day's cycling too! The owner, Steve, was an absolute gem. I couldn't find reception, even know its sign posted, so he came out and gave me a tour of the Campsite. He said I can hang my clothes up anywhere and even offered to pick some food up for me! I will definitely be back and would recommend this campsite to anyone!!

Disliked: I can't fault this Campsite.

Liked: Wonderful campsite! Great facilities. There is a bathroom block with two toilets, two good showers, two sinks, ample space to get changed and a baby changing station. Stunning views. Amazing walks. You can walk to the waterfall from the site and do a circular walk along the river and back into the village past 2 fantastic pubs. ShowCaves are only a 5 min drive and really worth a visit. Dogs welcome in the caves. Helpful and v friendly owner. Dogs welcome on site. Fire pits and bbqs allowed. Highly recommend.

Local attractions

Getting out into the national park is a doddle – get your boots on for the hour-long hike to Henrhyd Waterfall, perhaps, or climb the Cribarth hill (Sleeping Giant) which overlooks the site. There are also riding stables a mile away. For something a bit more leisurely, take the 15-minute walk from site to Craig-y-Nos Country Park for a wander around the 40-acre park’s lake and meadows and a visit to Craig-y-Nos Castle and its listed theatre (once owned by famed opera singer Adelina Patti). A five-minute drive from the site takes you to the National Showcaves Centre for Wales, which has in the past been voted one of the UK’s best attractions – after you've delved underground, take the kids to the dino exhibit to see loads of life-sized model-sauruses. If you're yearning for a breath of sea air, it'll take you less than an hour to drive to the Gower Peninsula for some of the UK's best beaches.
