  • Peaceful, spacious site in the Brecon Beacons National Park
  • Two pubs within walking distance
  • Activity centre on site for outdoor pursuits
All sorts of alfresco adventures await in the Brecon Beacons National Park – and folk staying at Open Fire Camping may just surmise that they’re in a mighty fine place to make the most of them. And they’d be right, for this is not just a place to stay but also a licensed activity centre, where experienced professionals can hook you up with days of climbing, canoeing, caving and the like. Folks who’d prefer to roam free are within easy reach of heaps of walking trails (both leisurely strolls and mountain scrambles) and can consult the site’s handy collection of maps to ensure they don’t wander astray. It’s a cracking location to chill out in, too (excellent news for those who’ve worn themselves out by day), as there's there’s heaps of space around the site’s different levels to find a pitch that suits you. Set up as a group or pick a more private corner from which to admire the views over Cribarth and do some stargazing by night (you’re in an International Dark Sky Reserve here so there should be some spectacular starry displays, cloud permitting). Keen to keep a calm vibe on site, the owners here have kept facilities to just the essentials like wifi, toilets and showers. Firepits have been scattered around the site, and you can buy firewood here or bring your own. If you don’t have the energy to cook dinner, there are a couple of pubs in the little Powys village of Pen-y-cae, just under a mile away.

Liked: Campfires are great and the site has firewood and kindling for sale. Friendly chickens and cat. The hosts are very nice. Level ground for a good night sleep. Also walking distance to the pub and has a bus stop nearby.

Disliked: No internet or cell reception. The WiFi wasn't working.

Unpowered grass tent site

Liked: Spent my birthday here! It was late booking but the hosts were really helpful. Liked the location and view, small site, back to basics, simple but perfect for a small tent set up or a small group, great to have a fire option, hot showers brilliant. Friendly and welcoming on arrival, left a nice note and helpful text beforehand. Plenty of space, quiet. You will need to walk your stuff across the site , cars are in the carpark at the main gate, all of this is in the information provided so very clear instructions, personally had no issues with this but might not work for everyone . Will stay again for sure lived the wildlife and ideal for walks in the area. Caves nearby and waterfall walks. Saw they also have a bunk house so ideal for bigger outdoor groups. I would recommend this to anyone wanting to avoid the crowds.

Liked: The campsite was amazing and the view spectacular. It was lovely and quiet, and easy to get into the nearest town when needed. I loved being able to have a fire pit in the evenings, and the toilet block was clean and free to use.

Disliked: The firewood was more expensive than I expected at £8, and we couldn't get it on one night as there was no one in.

Local attractions

Getting out into the national park is a doddle – get your boots on for the hour-long hike to Henrhyd Waterfall, perhaps, or join a group at the licensed activity centre to climb Cribarth. Other outdoorsy antics that can be booked on site include archery, gorge walking, climbing and canoeing, and there’s a riding stables a mile away. For something a bit more leisurely, take the 15-minute walk from site to Craig-y-Nos Country Park for a wander around the 40-acre park’s lake and meadows and a visit to Craig-y-Nos Castle and its listed theatre (once owned by famed opera singer Adelina Patti). A five-minute drive from the site takes you to the National Showcaves Centre for Wales, which has in the past been voted one of the UK’s best attractions – after you've delved underground, take the kids to the dino exhibit to see loads of life-sized model-sauruses. If you're yearning for a breath of sea air, it'll take you less than an hour to drive to the Gower Peninsula for some of the UK's best beaches.
