Plas Y Cadno: View over the site

General

  • Peaceful site on a working farm just outside Llanwrtyd Wells
  • Half an hour's drive from Elan Valley and Brecon Beacons
  • Easy access from the A483; pubs and shops half a mile away

Make your way to a peaceful site on a working farm in the Powys countryside… when you roll up to Plas Y Cadno, you’ll be joining a small place just on the edge of lovely little Llanwrtyd Wells (the smallest town in Wales, fact fans) and within easy reach of the Brecon Beacons and Cambrian Mountains.

A quick flick through the pics here will give you a glimpse into the fine scenery that awaits for those heading out for a walk, a bike ride, a horseback hack or some other form of outdoor activity; this is a part of the world that’s peppered with old Roman roads, teeny chapels, ancient standing stones and all sorts of other little bits of intrigue (as well as some stunning scenery and abundant wildlife, of course).

Middle of nowhere then? Not at all. Play Y Cadno is easily accessed just off the A483, with the town centre’s shops, pubs and other amenities about half a mile away. That’s particularly handy for picking up supplies to light a barbecue or campfire (both of which are permitted here to warm your evenings).

Facilities on site are fairly simple, stretching just to unisex showers and toilets. Dogs are allowed to join you on site, but they’ll need to be kept on a lead to avoid scaring the neighbouring sheep.

Please note

    Disliked:

Overpriced. There was nowhere to wash dishes. The lights didn't always work in the showers. The facilities could do with a little TLC. This is a working farm and so it can get a little noisy. I can accept that as it is to be expected, but there were a lot of old vehicles, tyres and trailers in a couple of areas which did spoil the views. The photographs I saw showed picture perfect views so I was disappointed.

Fantastic location on a farm just park where you want and pitch up.
    Fire facilities if wanted
Quiet at night despite being relatively close to the road.
We were there on a offroading trip and got some decent advice about the local roads from one of the people there.
    Owners were really nice
    Very little light pollution too

    Disliked:

Showers were a bit rubbish, but it had showers which was awesome

Nothing apart from locality to Town - walking distance to great Pub and useful Convenience Store with Fuel.
Site that promotes 'no rules' perhaps okay for youngsters and stags but the Site is well past its heyday with failing facilities run by likely hard working farming family but seemingly looking to run the campsite into the ground with zero ongoing investment.

    Disliked:

Sloping site with long grass (always wet with dew)
Dreary views over farm/industrial plant and equipment
Awful Toilets - dirty - no paper or soap
Dreadful Shower facility (partially decommissioned with rot)
CDP - just a hole in ground with rock over metal cover and no rinse water

From the manager...

Hello, sorry you feel the need to leave a bad review. The site has a gentle slope yes, I fail to see what we are able to do about the dew on the grass as this isn’t something we can change. The grass was also cut during your stay.
The toilets are cleaned every morning and soap and paper is left for guests, I do this myself. We spoke to you whilst you stayed and no comments were made about any of the stuff mentioned above which is disappointing. Sorry if we disappointed.

Local attractions

Poke your nose into some history tales… the ruins of Llandovery Castle (20 minutes’ drive) were once a grand 13th-century fortress and the hilltop Carreg Cennen Castle (45 minutes) is another castle that has crumbled since the 13th century. At the Dolaucothi Gold Mines (half an hour), you could learn about Roman mining tricks and get down underground to see them yourselves. Elsewhere, the National Cycle Museum (25 minutes) is about the timeline of the bicycle instead.

If you’re looking to get a taste of the local landscapes, you’ll be in for a treat. Elan Valley walks (half an hour) are especially scenic, with six dams around the valley the disused track Elan Valley Railway now used as a track for walkers, and Llyn Brianne (45 minutes) is another hot spot for hikers to take in lake views as they make their way around.

The Brecon Beacons National Park (half an hour) has many more spectacular walks, including the climb up Pen y Fan (an hour), or there’s the Red Kite Feeding Station in Rhayader (25 minutes) to see red kites being fed. Of course, for hikes coastal-style or watersports, the Pembrokeshire coastline (an hour) is also within driving distance.
