General

  • Hosted eco-friendly site surrounded by spectacular Powys countryside
  • Eco buildings surrounded by a wildflower camping meadow
  • Straw-bale kitchen, wooden play area, toilets and showers

A rural retreat awaits at the peaceful Powys base of Sychpwll Centre, a walker's paradise in the Welsh countryside, two miles from the village of Llandrinio.

The centre houses a range of eco-friendly buildings, surrounded by a wildflower camping meadow. As the site backs onto the River Vyrnwy, both it and the surrounding countryside are an excellent base for guests who want to have an environmentally-friendly stay among spectacular scenery.

Guests are welcome to use the centre's straw-bale kitchen for indoor cooking; outdoors, both barbecues and campfires are allowed. Several country pubs with good food and drink are close by, and guests will be within 30 minutes' drive of the market towns of Shrewsbury, Welshpool and Oswestry.

The site also has a toilet block with instant warm water and showers.

Easy to find, good communication from the hosts and a friendly welcome.
We booked last minute for a stop on our way home from the Lake District and couldn’t have hoped for a better place to spend the night - wish we’d have stayed longer!
We had a tour from the hosts and their gorgeous dog on arrival and were lucky enough to be the only ones staying so had the place to ourselves and pick of the pitches. Lovely open space with cut outs in the grass to pitch up on.
Very peaceful, few farm noises as to be expected. We didn’t explore much as was only a 1 night stop but looked to be some lovely walks from the camp as well as a river to kayak/canoe in. Also has a children’s play area.
The toilets surprised us; for the price of the site and compared to others similar we expected very basic toilets but these were done out lovely, very clean and nicely decorated.
Definitely keeping a note of this one to stay again!

Lovely relaxed eco site with good clean facilities. Great kitchen to use, being able to boil a kettle in the morning feels like cheating but as a coffee addict, its bliss. There’s several camping options, we camped in the smaller field which was great for my quiet teenage boy. The larger field has an amazing playground in it. The whole place is so interesting for children to explore and has a really chilled and safe vibe. My son had his first ever river swim by the site, encouraged by the lovely Pete and Seb. I really enjoyed sitting in the sun and watching. It really is an eco site, seems nothing is wasted in creating the facilities. The owners have worked really hard here to make something special that doesn’t impact the environment. *Really reasonable rates and fire pit hire
*Loads of places to go nearby
*Easy to find if you out the name of the centre in sat nav not postcode
    *No road noise
    *great place to watch sunset
    *dark sky
    *level pitches

Beautiful site with excellent facilities and direct access to the River Severn. Really spacious informal pitches surrounded by wildflower meadow. Loved the access to the communal kitchen space which is a really nice touch, especially if the weather isn't great. If you're lucky enough to get a clear evening, the night sky and star gazing has to be seen to be believed, one of the best spots I've seen in this country. Hope to be back for another visit soon.

Directions

Your satnav will get you lost: please read the directions below.

The nearest train station is Shrewsbury, followed by Gobowen or Welshpool.

There is a bus service from Shrewsbury bus station with Tanat Valley Coaches. The D74 service runs approximately every three hours, Monday to Saturday. If you get off at Llandrinio bridge traffic lights the centre is about one mile from here.

There is a local taxi service in the village and if you prefer, Chris' Cabs will happily collect you from the train station.

From London:

Take the M1 and then the M6 towards Birmingham but do not join the toll section. Keep on the main M6 and then exit on the M54 towards Telford. Keep on this motorway until it becomes the A5 towards Oswestry and north Wales. After a series of roundabouts look out for the A458 to Welshpool and turn left. Continue down the A458 for a couple of miles and turn right at the B4393 towards Llandrinio and Lake Vyrnwy.

After just over 7 miles you will come to a set of traffic lights just before a humpback bridge over the River Severn. Turn right immediately after the bridge. The signpost says Haughton. The first turning on the right signs to Haimwood but keep on the main lane and after just under a mile take the second turning on the right. This narrow lane is not signed but look out for the telegraph pole. If you pass a sign on the left to Rhos Common you have just overshot the lane! Drive down the lane and follow the tarmac as it turns sharp right. At the end of the lane drive though a clump of trees and you have arrived.

Local attractions

Based a mile from where the unpolluted River Vrynwy meets the River Severn, Sychpwll is cosy in winter and normally with a good climate in summer. There’s more than enough to do to keep everyone happy all year round, with those coming for walking or cycling holidays particularly having lots of choice.

The hiking in this area gives world-class views, such as the famous Offa’s Dyke Path or one of the three routes to the landmark Rodney’s Pillar. Visitors can also visit local farmers’ markets or nearby Lake Vrynwy, or try their hand at one of the many activities nearby, including climbing, fishing, horse riding and watersports. Or, for those who like to hit a ball as hard as possible, tennis is available in town and there’s a golf course within half an hour’s drive.

The market towns of Shrewsbury, Welshpool and Oswestry are around seven miles miles away for shopping, and there are plenty of days out at local attractions such as historic Powys Castle and the Welshpool to Llanfair Light Steam Railway.

Culture vultures can go slightly further afield to Ludlow and Shrewsbury (around 13 miles away), for festivals, arts events and nights on the town.
