Spacious and warm safari tent

  • Spacious rural site at an outdoor activity centre in rural Powys
  • A mile from Hay-on-Wye; on the edge of the Brecon Beacons
  • Canoeing and archery activities on site
Families, groups, couples, adventure-seekers, bookish types… all are welcome at Outdoors@Hay, a spacious site in the Powys countryside around a mile from Hay-on-Wye. This area, at the northern tip of the Brecon Beacons National Park and close to the River Wye, is well known for its outdoor activities – and organising them is supremely straightforward for guests at this site. The accommodation here is linked to an outdoor centre that runs canoeing and archery activities (suitable for beginners) under expert supervision. You’ll need to book ahead for these, so ask for info using the requests box once you’ve booked your stay. Having activities and accommodation on site makes this a good spot for group activity breaks or a couple of families holidaying together, but that’s not the only way to have a break here. Outdoors@Hay is also a handy location for independent days out, hiking or cycling along local routes or heading into Hay-on-Wye to see the castle, drink in cosy pubs and browse the famed bookshops. Whatever you choose to get up to by day, a good night’s sleep should be in order – this is a peaceful site surrounded by trees and open space (and please note that it is not suitable for stag/hen parties or other noisy gatherings). The setup is traditional but well kept, with facilities stretching to the use of a fridge and washing-up area, plus toilets and showers. Campfires and barbecues are permitted but will need to be raised off the ground to avoid scorching the grass.

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked Lovely quiet site with very welcoming owners who were happy to provide a quick tour of facilities and local knowledge on where to eat. Facilities were good and kept nice and clean. Free hot shower without the need for tokens!

Disliked Quite a distance to walk into town, but food and drink available on the campsite so not really necessary to venture out. If I was being really picky, the communal fridge wasn't that cold - but I did visit during one of the hottest days of the year!

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked My third stay at Outdoors. Solo male traveller but don’t be misled by 2 people minimum booking, at this price you’re booking floor space and it’s good value at that!

I was in a tent and there’s enough flat space not to be waking up with your foot poking out in the morning. I was there in the latest thunderstorms and noticed how well drained the site was with the only puddles being on the tracks. Pretty amazing considering the rain we got.

A quiet spot too with most of the noise being made by animals and birds. Very little traffic noise except the odd tractor which just underscores you’re in farmland proper.

Kitted out for outdoor sports like kayaking but I didn’t (you wouldn’t get me out again) but lots of lovely local walks too. Me? I went for the books!

The management are super helpful and always on call. I found any comms were quick and clear.

There’s a cider bar which looked comfortable and inviting. The facilities are clean and fully functional and in sufficient quantity.

I’ve got my eye on a couple of the glamping options for if the tent isn’t an option for any reason.

The reason I gave it maximum score is that it isn’t pristine. It’s a working campsite with an environmental conscience. I’ve been to too many sites that are so antiseptic that it was unwelcoming. Outdoors feels like camping but you’re absolutely not roughing it.

Finally, it was good to see couples, families and groups all enjoying themselves.

Disliked Not much they can do about thunderstorms- I should’ve looked at the weather before I booked…
