  • Spacious rural site at an outdoor activity centre in rural Powys
  • A mile from Hay-on-Wye; on the edge of the Brecon Beacons
  • Canoeing and archery activities on site
Families, groups, couples, dogs, adventure-seekers, bookish types… all are welcome at Outdoors@Hay, a spacious site in the Powys countryside around a mile from Hay-on-Wye. This area, at the northern tip of the Brecon Beacons National Park and close to the River Wye, is well known for its outdoor activities – and organising them is supremely straightforward for guests at this site. The accommodation here is linked to an outdoor centre which runs canoeing and archery courses, all under expert supervision and suitable for beginners. You’ll need to book ahead for these, so ask for info using the requests box once you’ve booked your stay. Having lots of activities and accommodation on site makes this a good spot for group activity breaks or a couple of families holidaying together, but that’s not the only way to have a break here. Outdoors@Hay is also a handy location for independent days out, hiking or cycling along local routes or heading into Hay-on-Wye to see the castle, drink in cosy pubs and browse the famed bookshops. Whatever you choose to get up to by day, a good night’s sleep should be in order – this is a peaceful site surrounded by trees and open space (and please note that it is not suitable for stag/hen parties or other noisy gatherings). The setup is traditional but well kept, with facilities stretching to the use of a fridge and washing-up area, plus toilets and showers. Campfires and barbecues are permitted but will need to be raised off the ground to avoid scorching the grass.

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked: Lovely place and as it was early in the season we had it to ourselves! We were originally going to camp but with threats of 50mph winds and rain I asked if there was room at the Tyleu Lodge instead and luckily we stayed in there instead! Great kitchen and living facilities, comfortable and clean, Sharon was friendly and showed me around when I arrived as well as telling me about what events were happening locally over the weekend which was lovely. A short walk or drive into Hay itself so very convenient. We had a wonderful stay and will definitely be back- thank you!

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked: Had everything we needed for a quick weekend getaway. Tent pitch areas clean and flat, easy to set up our tents and can park next to our tent. We were really impressed with the cleanliness of the showers and toilet block, perfect to come back to after a long day of hiking.

Bell tent

Liked: Sharon met us when we arrived ( held by work and traffic). A friendly welcome and she then dhowed us were all the amenities were. She provided books about things happening around the town, dinning out, pubs ect. Everything was clean and tidy. The view was spectacular, very little light pollution. Weather was glorious. The glamping set up had everything you will need, just bring your own bedding. We met mick the next day and he was do friendly as well. We both absolutely loved it there. I can't express enough how peaceful and idyllic it is there. I'd highly recommend that you book to stay here. Sharon and mick, thank you do much for an outstanding stay. We look forward to returning soon. You are only about 2 miles away from a well stocked co op store. Plenty of wood to purchase on site, as well as a fridge and freezer.

Disliked: It's perfect

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked: Fabulous camp site. Hosts are welcoming, toilets, showers, bar everything you need. Breakfast rolls. Water on site to fill water buts. Choice of camping spot. Easy to find and local to walks, river and not to far from main village. Value for money. Unfortunately our tent let us down and we had to leave but we will definitely be returning in the near future as soon as our tent is waterproofed :-)

Disliked: Nothing too dislike

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked: Quiet and peaceful, with well laid out pitches and good clean facilities. I liked the fact that it wasn't lit up at night -the dark skies with no light pollution were fantastic. Very handy for Hay-on-Wye.

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked: In a Quiet location and wasn't busy. The pitches were big and well thought out. Showers were hot. Great to have use of a fridge and freezer. Hearing the owls at night was incredible. Very friendly owners who were very approachable.

Disliked: Didn't find the charging facilities as stated. Friend had an awkward blow up mattress with a plug attached but used her roll mat in the end.

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked: Fantastic little site surrounded by nature. The kids loved having bats swooping over their heads and clear, star-filled skies. Stayed outside of the festival season so may have been quieter than usual, but facilities were clean and the showers warm. On-site bar with the local brew was a particular highlight, as was the exceptional customer service - thank you again for the emergency marshmallows for toasting!
