  • Spacious and peaceful site with lovely Brecon Beacons views
  • Within half an hour's drive of hill walks, canoeing and horse riding
  • A 10-minute drive from Hay-on-Wye and the Hay Festival site
Question: what do bookworms, mountain bikers, hikers and heritage railway buffs have in common? Answer: they should all be making a beeline for Borders Hideaway Holiday Home Park in Herefordshire: this small but spacious site is on the edge of the Brecon Beacons National Park, under five minutes’ drive from the village of Clyro and 10 minutes from the antiquarian book browsers’ haven of Hay-on-Wye. If you want to load up with paperbacks and hide away in the hills perusing them, this site’s a suitable venue, with space and solitude, country views and a sensory garden to soothe your other senses. It’s also a comfy base to come back to after days filled with active stuff in the area; there's a splendid combo of hot showers and hairdryers in the bathrooms. With an eye for the small but significant details, the kids’ playground is centrally placed so grownups can keep an eye on younger party members while they continue sizzling sausages (barbecues are permitted on site)… or savouring their stacks of paperbacks.

Liked Beautiful location and site - clean great facilities and space.
Love the radio on in the bathrooms

Have been before and definitely will be back

Disliked It would be great to have another shower/ toilet block - when it’s a busy weekend - 3 showers and 4 toilets can be tight!

Electric grass pitch (family)

Liked This is a fantastic site for a whole load of reasons - it is wonderfully well maintained, situated in a beautiful valley surrounded by trees, fields and wildlife and offers every type of camping you could ever need. We stayed with our VW camper in the playing field, under the shade of a young oak tree with nesting birds all around. Amazing toilets and showers, everything was spotless. The orchard is such a special place, mostly unvisited by other campers, but well worth seeking out. I cannot praise this site enough. You have to visit!

Disliked Nothing.

Electric hardstanding and grass touring pitch

Liked Great location, beautiful and very well maintained site. We recieved a warm welcome and were given all information as required. Facilities were very clean and the individual shower/washrooms were very pleasant. Great for dogs with a dedicated walking route.

Disliked Shower cubicles were a little small. The kids play area is situated in the middle of the main camp field, it was fine for us as it was very quite, but had it been busy we would have wanted to be away from it.

Non-electric grass tent pitch (sloping, wild)

Liked Loved the wild camping field. Very peaceful and well maintained. A bit of sloping but if you pitch your tent in the right position, it’s easy to adjust. Shower/toilet block is fab with 3 self contained little bathrooms with loo, sink and shower to yourself. All spotlessly clean and toasty warm. There is tourists info with a socket for phone charging which is a bonus. The pot washing station provides washing up liquid and a scrubbing brush - another small but thoughtful touch. The WiFi worked really well all weekend which seems to be unusual on campsites! Well done guys, top site with top hosts - I’ll be back 😊

Liked Spacious pitches, very clean facilities and well maintained grounds. Very friendly greeting by staff. Only stopped for 1 night on way to visiting family in Wales, had a lovely walk into Hay on Wye and back. Will be back to explore the area further.

Electric hardstanding and grass touring pitch

Liked Liked.. loved everything. We stayed on pitch 6 with our touring caravan over this bank holiday. Large hardstanding/grass pitch. Water hook up and 13amp electric. Absolutely spotless site, toilet and shower facilities super clean and modern, wash up area (although we didn't use it) was also spotless. High pressure elsen point tucked away, lots of bins. Beautiful thick grass, lovely dog walk in a loop.
We had a bbq and others had fire pits, such beautiful views, honestly had absolutely no complaints. Will definitely return.

Disliked Packing up to come home

Local attractions

Once you’ve filled your boots in Hay-on-Wye’s numerous bookshops, there’s more to do in town, including exploring the castle, strolls and picnics by the river, and fortifying stops in the many hostelries and eateries. If you fancy further river ventures, make for Glasbury (10 minutes' drive away) to hire canoes and kayaks for trips down the Wye. Should you prefer the ease of an engine-driven craft, the base at Llangattock (40 minutes) has cruisers for daily hire. If it’s walks at height you’re after, Talgarth (15 minutes) is a starting point for paths up the Black Mountains’ highest peak, Waun Fach; for gentle wooded wanders with a waterfall at the end, plus wildlife spotting on the way, head over to the Pwll y Wrach nature reserve (20 minutes). To see the Beacons on horseback, there are treks of various lengths from Llangorse Multi Activity Centre (25 minutes), as well as indoor climbing and high up zipwires and rope walks both inside and out. If that’s not energetic enough, Oakerwood Leisure (40 minutes) has pastimes like paintballing, quad biking and clay pigeon shooting to get the adrenaline pumping. Historical type? Clamber round ancient sites like Crickhowell Castle and Llanthony Priory (35 and 45 minutes), puff through the hills on the Brecon Mountain Railway from Pant (50 minutes), or descend deep into mining heritage at the Big Pit National Coal Museum, an hour away.
