  • Simple site on a working Powys farm with access to the Severn river
  • A 10-minute drive to Welshpool, the Montgomery Canal and Powis Castle
  • Secluded grass pitches by a pond, with pubs, shops and castles nearby
The wild camping pitches at Upper Severn Farm Camping overlook a wildflower pond on a working farm with amazing Powys countryside view. With only a few pitches available at this secluded spot, you can immerse yourself in the sounds of nature – and if you’re here on a clear night, do take a moment to spy stars glittering in the dark skies above. The basic on-site amenities include running water, showers and loos in a converted cow shed – and there’s a washing machine too, in case you feel the need to spruce yourselves up. Remember to bring a torch for any nocturnal wanderings too. However, please do remember that this is a busy dairy farm, so animal and tractor noise is to be expected around milking time. The owner is happy to give a farm walk if you’d like to meet the 300 cows and calves, six pet sheep, five chickens, three dogs and two cats (phew) but access to the livestock is not allowed without supervision. You’re welcome to bring one small, well-behaved dog, to be kept on a lead at all times. Welshpool (10 minutes’ drive) has streets lined with fine Georgian buildings and several decent pubs, as well as handy supermarkets and takeaways for keeping you all fed and watered back at base. A track runs right down to the Severn river from the camping field, where you can dip a toe in the water or go wild swimming, and you can also tee off at a couple of golf courses within a 20-minute drive.

Local attractions

The entire length of Montgomery Canal (known as the Monty in these parts, 10 minutes’ drive) is designated a Site of Special Scientific Interest. Keep your eyes peeled for otters, water voles and kingfishers on towpaths strolls, or hire a narrowboat to potter along the tree-lined waterway at a leisurely pace You can’t escape history in Wales, and Powys is no exception. Mug up on canal heritage in the displays of archaeological finds at Y Lanfa Powysland Museum and Welshpool Library (10 minutes), or tour the delightful mishmash of medieval architecture and 17th-century interiors at National Trust-owned Powis Castle and Garden (10 minutes) – and don’t neglect the spectacular topiary in the grounds. If the kids get bored with history and stately piles, jump aboard a vintage steam train on the Welshpool and Llanfair Light Railway (10 minutes), and chug through wooded countryside to Llanfair Caereinion (25 minutes). You can up the ante here by enrolling on a Driver Experience course and taking control in the engine room.
