Riverbend Caravan Park: Herons, dippers, otters and kingfishers can be seen on the river banks and fishing is allowed

General

  • Peaceful park with river fishing and access to Glyndwr Way footpath
  • Half an hour from Powis Castle and 50 minutes from Barmouth beach
  • Within an hour's drive of Snowdonia National Park and Shropshire Hills

A river runs through it… That’s the title of a 1994 film starring Brad Pitt, and it’s also one of the many fab things about Riverbend Caravan Park in Powys.

The Banwy, a shallow tributary of the Severn, flows through this peaceful Welsh park just outside the village of Llangadfan. You may not spot Brad Pitt on the riverbanks, but there are far better odds of encountering kingfishers and otters, and of catching grayling, brown trout or salmon… just bring along your fishing rod.

Smaller visitors can splash about in the stream and play Pooh Sticks from the nearby stone bridge; there’s also a playground for them to hurtle around on site, and another one in the garden of the pub a minute’s walk away. If you’re all up for long walks, the 135-mile Glyndwr’s Way passes by the village and links up with the even more mammoth Offa’s Dyke Path in Welshpool, half an hour’s drive away.

Back at base, the facilities are clean and well-maintained, with heated towel rails in the washrooms. Dogs are welcome at Riverbend Caravan Park, and also in the pub, which serves hot food and local ales.

This site is a member of Hillandale Caravans group.

Please note

No cars/motorbikes by the pitch/unit. All cars must be parked in the designated area.

A cable measuring at least 25 metres is needed for the electric hook-ups.

No hen/stag parties permitted via Pitchup.com.

Single-sex bookings of 3 or more people (couples and immediate family members excepted) are not permitted via Pitchup.com.

Protective masks must be worn at all times in common areas.

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act (i.e. Pit Bull Terrier, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino, and Fila Brasileiro).

There is no charge for fishing but holidaymakers are required to bring their rod licence and own equipment.

Customers are encouraged to use their own toilet/shower facilities wherever possible.

Everything! This site is really beautiful and we were fortunate to have a pitch right next to the river! The weather was also good to us with it being sunny every day. We had 6 days of glorious freedom from lockdown in our new caravan and couldn’t wish for a better place. The managers (Angie and Lindsey? I think) were fantastic, always visible or on hand to help but in no way intrusive, very approachable , helpful and friendly, We would definitely love to come back to Riverbend. Thanks for a great holiday

This was our first experience in our new caravan so we were quite nervous!

As soon as we arrived we were greeted and made to feel so welcome the whole time we were there. Found Angie to be very helpful and very knowledgeable and would go more than the extra mile to ensure we had a lovely stay.

Our electric tripped (our own fault) on a couple of occasions and management sent someone out pretty much straight away to resolve which must have been annoying for them but they were so understanding and really helpful.

The river is just lovely, the kids loved playing in it and skimming. The dogs enjoyed it too !

I liked the little bridge you walk over to the field where you can let your dogs off the lead for a play. At night we star gazed on the field and it was lovely !

Can’t comment on the toilet facilities as they are closed due to restrictions but I can imagine they are immaculate just like the rest of the site.

There was a little shop nearby that sells fresh eggs too so that was convenient.

We would love to return in the future and also visit the pub which is a stones throw away from site too.

    Disliked:

    Nothing really.
Only thing I would possibly add
Would be a football pitch on the field nearby when you cross the bridge so that the kids could play with balls away from the caravans. We had a game of bat and ball on there but the grass was too long for football.

From the manager...

Thank you so very much for your lovely review Laura, We are thrilled to know that you all had a lovely time. For your first time touring you did very well, we are more than happy to welcome you back to Riverbend.

The facilities were very nice, I’ve stayed at quite a lot camp sites and caravan sites and it’s probably the nicest and cleanest facilities I’ve seen. The owner was amazing, I was on my motorcycle and running late due to traffic and she called me to explain how to get to my pitch and to ride safe and not rush......very nice and courteous. Also said I didn’t have to rush off the next day as the pitch was free until 2pm. Great service and will definitely take my Caravan there.

Stayed at this lovely site for one night when testing out our new motorhome. We received a Really friendly welcome from the manager Angie who gave us lots of helpful tips for things to do and places to eat.
Site is in a lovely location next to a meandering mostly shallow river and it is really well maintained with lots of picnic benches for guests to use. The modern shower / wash / toilet block is exceptionally clean - you would be hard pressed to find better and cleaner facilities anywhere! It is clearly evident that the managers take immense pride in this site and the warmth of their welcome. We have no hesitation in recommending Riverbend and we will definitely return in the future. Thank you.

Friendly staff. Fantastic washroom facilities and very well looked after grounds.
The owners were lovely and were very proud of their site (and quite rightly too).
The toilet/washing block has 3 separate little bathrooms (toilet, sink and shower), then another separate shower and 3 more toilets and a couple of communal sinks.
So plenty of facilities for all, while we stayed there.
The location is great for exploring the local area and up into Snowdonia National Park. There is a shop, cafe and pub, all within 50 meters of the site, which is another bonus!

    Disliked:

Not a biggie...but no separate onsite dog walking area, where dogs can be let off the lead.

From the manager...

Thank you very much for your lovely review, I am sorry about not allowing dogs off leads but as you are surrounded by open countryside and sheep , we feel this could be difficult when it comes to controlling your dog, plus not all dogs are friendly! We are very happy you enjoyed the Park and all the lovely areas, and you are right, we do take a lot of pride in it. We are very fortunate to be surrounded by beautiful countryside . Please come and see us again.

The campsite is predominantly Static Caravans but, down by the river they have a few touring pitches and what a hidden gem, the facilities are excellent and immaculate.

The management team Angie and Lindsey were superbly friendly and accommodating and we enjoyed two nights at the site but we will be back soon.

It is a short walk to the Cann Post Office Hotel and we enjoyed a simple but tasty meal there and a few of their finest ales.

    Disliked:

The only thing that I will say here is that although we fully appreciate and understand that an immaculate campsite needs work to keep it so, but for our two night stay, the work was being carried out right by our pitch for both days and, that really was quite upsetting.

It did not spoil our stay and we will absolutely be back, but only ask that the work be spread out over the site to prevent this. Sorry Angie!

From the manager...

Hello again you lovely people, Thank you for your review and your wonderful comments. I couldn't agree with you more about the up-keep and i promise you work has finished on the Touring field, our mower was out of action for a while and we had a lot to catch up on, it was simply bad timing but...…had you come to see me, the work near your pitch would have ceased there and then. Looking forward to seeing you both really soon.

Local attractions

One very fine way to visit Welshpool involves steaming in courtesy of the Welshpool and Llanfair Light Railway, from Llanfair Caereinion (15 minutes’ drive). Once in town, you can continue the historical theme with wanders round the Powysland Museum and tours of Powis Castle, a medieval fortress housing the treasures Robert Clive brought back from India; both are half an hour by car.

Treasures of different kind surround Gregynog Hall, also half an hour away: 750 acres of estate include Grade I-listed formal gardens and a nature reserve of ancient oak woodlands where you might see hares, wood warblers and horseshoe bats.

Mazes, myths, mine descents and craft workshops are on the menu at King Arthur’s Labyrinth in Corris, 45 minutes away, along with transport nostalgia at the steam railway museum.

If it’s a vintage seaside experience you’re seeking, beetle over to Barmouth (50 minutes) for wide sands, safe seas, donkey rides and candy floss, or for something stranger, make the hour and 10-minute trip to Portmeirion, a fantastical Italian fishing village with a scifi past.

Depending on which way you point yourself, an hour’s car journey can take you hiking round Lake Bala and rafting upon it, or rambling the high ridges of the Stiperstones National Nature Reserve in the Shropshire Hills.
