  • Outdoor breaks on a family-run farm in rural Montgomeryshire
  • Powis Castle 30 minutes' drive; Aberystwyth an hour and 10 minutes
  • Feed the poultry and collect eggs
If you’ve ever fancied yourself a farmer - or at least a little green-fingered – guests staying at this rural site can experience farm life to the fullest. The name of this place is Graig Farm Glamping and as a family-run site deep in the green countryside of Montgomeryshire, feeding the poultry and collecting eggs is on the cards. That’s all while being roughly an hour from the coast and 20 minutes from the English border – convenient, right? What’s even more convenient is that you won't have to stray far to find top-quality local produce here. Graig Farm Glamping has an on-site farm shop selling organic meat, fruit and veg and wine (you may need to order a short time in advance). This is a lively spot, where as well as the country views you'll have horses, cattle, sheep, emus and alpacas to entertain you throughout your stay. Barbecues and campfires are allowed in the designated areas, so you’ll always have a fine, food-filled way to end your evening on the farm. In terms of tracking down local amenities, the site is also about a mile from the small village of Mochdre and 10 minutes' drive from Newtown, where there are several pubs and restaurants, a cinema and a few small but well-curated museums. Since Graig Farm Glamping is a pet-friendly site, well-behaved dogs (on leads) are welcome throughout the camping season too.

Local attractions

Catch a show at the local independent big screen, The Regent Cinema (10 minutes' drive) or see who has the best aim with a friendly game at the local bowling alley (15 minutes). Further out are lakes, an old castle and waterfalls… That’s right - Powis Castle (30 minutes) is a medieval fortress and an impressive one at that. The terraced gardens make for some peaceful walks and inside, the Clive Museum houses Indian artefacts. If it’s lakes you’re after, see what birds you spot fluttering around RSPB Lake Vyrnwy (an hour) or track down the Elan Valley Reservoirs (an hour and 10 minutes) for six more lakes and activities like raft building, kayaking and canoeing. One way to take in the sloping Welsh countryside is aboard the steam trains that travel along the Welshpool and Llanfair Light Railway (35 minutes) – afternoon tea and fish and chips experiences are some options there. As for your dose of gorgeous waterfalls, there’s a 45-minute hike to the Devil's Bridge Falls (55 minutes). And your dose of coastal walks and boat trips? Aberystwyth (an hour and 10 minutes) has that.
