Smithy Park: Well-kept touring park (photo added by manager on 31/08/2022)

General

  • Pretty family-run park on the banks of the River Severn in Abermule
  • Montgomery, Welshpool and Newtown within a 15-minute drive
  • Riverside picnic spots and fishing on site

You're mostly aware of the River Severn as the thing that marks the border of England and Wales, yes? Take a look a little further – well away from the bit with the huge bridges, the UK’s longest river meanders through much of mid Wales, taking in some stunning rural spots along the way.

One of those spots is Smithy Park, a family-run touring park right on the banks of the river in a pretty corner of Powys, in the village of Abermule and 10 minutes’ drive from the town of Montgomery. Picnics and drinks by the riverside are popular activities here, as is settling in to spy on local residents (referring, of course, to the ducks, herons, kingfishers and swans that call the river home – maybe even an otter if you’re very lucky).

Also resident in the river are plenty of fish, which you’re welcome to try to hook out if you’ve got the right kit; you can try your luck a bit further upstream if you’ve got a permit stashed away too. Smaller travellers without such an interest in the river can be kept entertained at the playground and mini football pitch, or dispatched to the ‘Bookery’ by reception to borrow books, DVDs or jigsaws (and it’s also got a whole pile of info on local attractions, pubs and restaurants for planning purposes).

Site staff pride themselves on a warm welcome, and also on warm bathrooms – kept heated on cooler days and kitted out with private cubicles and handy bits such as a free hairdryer.

A local bus service runs from the village: the bus stop is 100 metres down the lane from the park.

A really well kept site with concrete pitches surrounded by grass. The fully serviced pitch included an easy to use grey waste hose that would be suitable for the outlet on any unit.
The facilities were clean and well maintained.
Even though we didn’t use the pub (Mulefest weekend) the fact that it was a short walk from the site was appealing.
The adjacent River Severn and Montgomery Canal provided an interesting walk.

    Disliked:

Obviously little the site can do about this but you certainly realise just how busy the nearby stretch of the A483 is at this time of year. Sounded a bit like the Isle of Man TT on Sunday morning.

From the manager...

Thank you for your review, it was quite a busy weekend on the road and in the village!

Great little site close to nature. Fully serviced pitch, perfectly level, making setting up on arrival a doddle. Facilities on site spotless with nice hot showers.
Go for a meal at the Abermule Inn, a quintessential village pub serving excellent meals at reasonable prices, a rarity nowadays.
As for location, 10mins to Newtown, 20mins to Welshpool, and an hour to Borth, so a good base for exploring. Locally a walk along the Montgomery canal is an excellent fresh air fix.

Quiet site with beautiful river bank seated area. The facilities were clean and perfect for my wedding preparations. Lovely walks in the area and several clastles that we didn't get time to visit so already planning another trip!

We couldn't find the local village shop and basic supplies were advertised on-site but not where to buy them - assume reception? Got chatting to a nice man in the local pub who was also staying on site, who kindly shared his loaf with us :-)

    Disliked:

You could hear the road noise but fine when you're in a camper or caravan but might be an issue if you were in a tent.

From the manager...

Thank you for your review.
Sadly the shop closed a few months ago, there are a few basics in the reception.
Hope to see you again.

The pitch was fully serviced abd included a TV aerial. The size of neatness of the pitch was perfect for our needs. Showers and toilet block very close and kept clean. There was a playground that our grandson loved and we could keep an eye on him from our pitch.
There is a walk close-by which takes you to another park or further on to walk alongside the canal.
Powis Castle is only a few miles away and Newtown (small, has a Spoons and plenty of supermarkets though) is just 4 miles away.
Lovely site that is kept neat and tidy throughout the caravan and camping areas.

    Disliked:

We couldn't get connected with the WiFi but we have our own unlimited service.

Pitch sizes were good, site was clean and tidy. Staff were friendly and welcoming. Added bonus was the site wifi which was good at all times. Dolforwyn Castle ruins (close to the site) are well worth a visit.

    Disliked:

The only thing for us was the road noise, obviously the site is close to the A483 so it was bound to be busy. Although a bit of a distraction, overall it did not spoil our enjoyment of the site and area.

Local attractions

The river, though mighty, isn’t the only waterway around here: the Montgomeryshire Canal is a short stroll away too, with a waterside path that lends itself well to walks or bike rides to Newtown or Berriew, or beyond to Welshpool (which is 10 miles away, so perhaps best to come back by bus if on foot).

Alternatively, drive to Welshpool (15 minutes) and then take rides on the Llanfair-Welshpool steam railway or boat trips along the canal to get a taste of the local scenery. The grand Italian-style gardens around Powis Castle (just outside Welshpool) are worth a wander too, for colourful floral displays, ambitious topiary and gorgeous views over the surrounds.

Somewhat more crumbling but no less atmospheric are the ruins of Dolforwyn Castle (half an hour’s walk) and Montgomery’s castle and town walls (10 minutes).

And though the countryside is splendid around here, sometimes the coast just calls your name – if that’s the case, drive west for an hour or so to get to Aberystwyth, Aberdyfi or Borth for a blast of sea air.

Must see

  • Powis Castle & Garden (8.2 miles)
  • Stokesay Castle (18.9 miles)
  • Ludlow Castle (24.9 miles)
