General
- Pretty family-run park on the banks of the River Severn in Abermule
- Montgomery, Welshpool and Newtown within a 15-minute drive
- Riverside picnic spots and fishing on site
You're mostly aware of the River Severn as the thing that marks the border of England and Wales, yes? Take a look a little further – well away from the bit with the huge bridges, the UK’s longest river meanders through much of mid Wales, taking in some stunning rural spots along the way.
One of those spots is Smithy Park, a family-run touring park right on the banks of the river in a pretty corner of Powys, in the village of Abermule and 10 minutes’ drive from the town of Montgomery. Picnics and drinks by the riverside are popular activities here, as is settling in to spy on local residents (referring, of course, to the ducks, herons, kingfishers and swans that call the river home – maybe even an otter if you’re very lucky).
Also resident in the river are plenty of fish, which you’re welcome to try to hook out if you’ve got the right kit; you can try your luck a bit further upstream if you’ve got a permit stashed away too. Smaller travellers without such an interest in the river can be kept entertained at the playground and mini football pitch, or dispatched to the ‘Bookery’ by reception to borrow books, DVDs or jigsaws (and it’s also got a whole pile of info on local attractions, pubs and restaurants for planning purposes).
Site staff pride themselves on a warm welcome, and also on warm bathrooms – kept heated on cooler days and kitted out with private cubicles and handy bits such as a free hairdryer.
A local bus service runs from the village: the bus stop is 100 metres down the lane from the park.

Local attractions
The river, though mighty, isn’t the only waterway around here: the Montgomeryshire Canal is a short stroll away too, with a waterside path that lends itself well to walks or bike rides to Newtown or Berriew, or beyond to Welshpool (which is 10 miles away, so perhaps best to come back by bus if on foot).
Alternatively, drive to Welshpool (15 minutes) and then take rides on the Llanfair-Welshpool steam railway or boat trips along the canal to get a taste of the local scenery. The grand Italian-style gardens around Powis Castle (just outside Welshpool) are worth a wander too, for colourful floral displays, ambitious topiary and gorgeous views over the surrounds.
Somewhat more crumbling but no less atmospheric are the ruins of Dolforwyn Castle (half an hour’s walk) and Montgomery’s castle and town walls (10 minutes).
And though the countryside is splendid around here, sometimes the coast just calls your name – if that’s the case, drive west for an hour or so to get to Aberystwyth, Aberdyfi or Borth for a blast of sea air.
