  • Pretty family-run park on the banks of the River Severn in Abermule
  • Montgomery, Welshpool and Newtown within a 15-minute drive
  • Riverside picnic spots and fishing on site
You're mostly aware of the River Severn as the thing that marks the border of England and Wales, yes? Take a look a little further – well away from the bit with the huge bridges, the UK’s longest river meanders through much of mid Wales, taking in some stunning rural spots along the way. One of those spots is Smithy Park, a family-run touring park right on the banks of the river in a pretty corner of Powys, in the village of Abermule and 10 minutes’ drive from the town of Montgomery. Picnics and drinks by the riverside are popular activities here, as is settling in to spy on local residents (referring, of course, to the ducks, herons, kingfishers and swans that call the river home – maybe even an otter if you’re very lucky). Also resident in the river are plenty of fish, which you’re welcome to try to hook out if you’ve got the right kit; you can try your luck a bit further upstream if you’ve got a permit stashed away too. Smaller travellers without such an interest in the river can be kept entertained at the playground and mini football pitch, or dispatched to the ‘Bookery’ by reception to borrow books, DVDs or jigsaws (and it’s also got a whole pile of info on local attractions, pubs and restaurants for planning purposes). Site staff pride themselves on a warm welcome, and also on warm bathrooms – kept heated on cooler days and kitted out with private cubicles and handy bits such as a free hairdryer. A local bus service runs from the village: the bus stop is 100 metres down the lane from the park.

Liked Immaculate small site, toilet and shower facilities spotless, fully serviced pitches incl tv coax on each plot. Local pub 5 mins walk, ok for drinks. Lovely country pubs, Bull and Heifer & Nags head a short 15 mins drive. Main road traffic noise not an issue for us. Highly recommend

FHU cement/asphalt and grass travel trailer campsite

Liked Flat concreted hard standing so no sharp stones, water at the pitch, waste also but I didn’t use this, small but clean toilet block. Walks from site, along the disused Montgomery Canal now a wildlife haven and very pretty, challenging walk up to Dolforwyn Castle ruins (free) and amazing views, access on site to a small area of the river Severn good for a paddle. Abermule Inn Pub 5 min walk also cafe. Free WiFi.

Disliked Road noise is quite loud. I was in a pop top van and I could hear it all night but if you were in a motorhome or caravan I suspect this would be less. No shop in village but big Morrisons and Aldi 4 miles away in Newtown. Lack of information on walking trails, circular walks, I am touring with a dog so walks are important to us. Very fast road adjacent near the site no foot path.

From the manager: Thank you for your review, glad you found the walk up to Dolforwyn Castle, it's worth the climb!
Our lovely new cafe in the village has a small stores too, and stocks the basics, goodies and local produce.

Liked The flat fully serviced pitches were close to amenities and I loved the small touches like the curtains around the sink and plenty of hooks. It was quiet but it might be livelier now that the school holidays have started.

The mop for campers to use kept everything clean too. Everything was spotless and neat. Booking in and finding the pitch was easy as there was some information to help you get around the site. The information had tips on where to eat etc too. I’ll definitely be back.

Disliked Nothing.

Liked Extremely well presented and run park with very clean facilities. Right next to the river Severn if you fancy cooling off, and 5mins walk from the Abermule Inn which does excellent food. Loads of walks nearby. We used the canal towpath to cycle into Newtown traffic free, although some parts need cutting back as they are narrow. Don't be put off by the sound of traffic from the A483, it does not intrude enough to spoil your stay. If you are a light sleeper the few vehicles at night are easily filtered out by earplugs. There is also a nice play area for the children away from the pitches, so you won't have stray balls whacking your van. Guests and staff alike are very friendly here. Phone signal on EE is strong enough to stream. Didn't try park wifi. Tv signal not great, and although the pitches have their own antenna cable, we couldn't get ours to work. Majority of pitches have an open view of the southern sky for satellite users.

Disliked There wasn't anything that would prevent us returning.

Local attractions

The river, though mighty, isn’t the only waterway around here: the Montgomeryshire Canal is a short stroll away too, with a waterside path that lends itself well to walks or bike rides to Newtown or Berriew, or beyond to Welshpool (which is 10 miles away, so perhaps best to come back by bus if on foot). Alternatively, drive to Welshpool (15 minutes) and then take rides on the Llanfair-Welshpool steam railway or boat trips along the canal to get a taste of the local scenery. The grand Italian-style gardens around Powis Castle (just outside Welshpool) are worth a wander too, for colourful floral displays, ambitious topiary and gorgeous views over the surrounds. Somewhat more crumbling but no less atmospheric are the ruins of Dolforwyn Castle (half an hour’s walk) and Montgomery’s castle and town walls (10 minutes). And though the countryside is splendid around here, sometimes the coast just calls your name – if that’s the case, drive west for an hour or so to get to Aberystwyth, Aberdyfi or Borth for a blast of sea air.
