Dyfi Adventure Campsite: Bench

General

  • Peaceful Dyfi valley site by a riverside, opened in 2019
  • A 15-minute drive from Machynlleth and 35 from the seaside at Barmouth
  • River beach, communal firepits and barbecues/campfires allowed

What might you adventurously fancy first when you arrive at Dyfi Adventure Campsite? A hike off into the Welsh hills, mountains and lush green countryside of the Dyfi valley? A hurtle down acclaimed mountain biking trails… or climbing to heady heights around the trails of Snowdonia National Park just to the north…?

Or you might care to take things most easily instead... If your sense of adventure extends to peace, quiet and beaches, all is sorted here too: Dyfi Adventure is in a land of spectacular views and gentle strolls, next to the River Dyfi for waterside ambles, paddles and a lounge on the riverside beach. More beaches – wide, wild and sandy – are within driving distance at Aberdyfi and Barmouth, each 35 minutes away.

And then? An evening around the campfire, but of course – both campfires and barbecues are sensibly allowed here and there’s a communal firepit if you’re still feeling sociable after your day mountain biking (bragging encouraged).

The closest big town for supplies is Machynlleth, 15 minutes’ drive away.

Wilder camping, with basic facilities - for the braver type30/09/2021

    Massive field.
You can pitch up where you like.
Massive gap between me and the neighbours.
    Nice view around.
I love the area, lots of outdoorsy places to see/visit nearby.
The gas shower was lovely. If you're squeamish about cobwebs though - go elsewhere!
There's no owner on site - but their contact details are on signage at the entrance.
The field is next to a river - which is nice to hear.
Great to listen to and spot wildlife - I could hear the owl hooting each night :-) (which is why I don't understand the people coming to a "wild" site such as this - and wanting to play their music - which they could listen to at any other time of their lives!! - or they could have gone to the pub just up the road??)

It depends on what you're looking for. This did the job for my short stay.

    Disliked:

I was curious to try the compost toilet, but also am still aware of touching things unecessarily (covid). The sign insisted that you must sit down on the seat, but the lid wouldn't stay open! So that would have meant sitting on a toilet with the lid on your back...yeah, I used either of the two portaloos instead. I mean they are portaloos. They are always grim.

There were a few blokes who turned up on the Saturday night and even though they were in the far corner of the field, insisted on playing their fast-beat music up until at least 9:30pm (which is when I couldn't take it any longer and put the earplugs in). (There is a sign asking people to be quiet after 10pm however - I don't know if they were).

There are two recycling skips - but they were full of mixed waste. Quite full. For a "wild" campsite - with eco vibes, this surprised me.

Oh, campers are given alloy wheels to burn their log fires on. After campers left, their fire had burned a circle into the ground. There's circles dotted about the field. Concerned that it needs to be addressed, coz if the field has been open only since this Summer, it's going to get wrecked pretty quickly.

Great location, loved the shower , It’s near to Dyfi bikepark and the off piste trails in Dyfi forest.

    Disliked:

The rubbish bin’s were full, no recycling. A urinal for the men would be good rather than having to use the compost loos. A brighter light in the shower.

There are 2 zones with facilities (compost and bio toilets): it would be great to have facilities to wash hands next to bio toilets too.

Local attractions

Start off with a stroll to the Old Coach House just over a mile away: it’s not a pub as the name would suggest, but a carefully managed wildlife garden open to the public and a lush landscape for birds and insects. The garden has a small pond, flower and vegetable beds, beehives and shaded seating areas – take a stroll round then settle down for a cream tea.

More energetically, the Dyfi valley is stellar mountain biking land in the land around  Machynlleth and the Dyfi forest. Hire a bike and helmet in town if you haven’t brought your own, then set off on the nine and a half-mile Cli-mach X trail around the southern part of the forest, or go for one of the Mach trails setting out from Machynlleth.

A day in Machynlleth should also be slotted into your schedule, to spend an afternoon around the swish Centre for Alternative Technology or picking up Welsh produce at the big Wednesday market. If you’re a hiker rather than a biker, walking paths cut through the town too: set off on the 135-mile Glyndwr's Way running through Powys from Knighton to Welshpool, or the 108 miles of the Dyfi Valley Way, meandering all the way along the River Dyfi and back down the other bank.

Must see

  • MOMA Wales - Y Tabernacl (8.1 miles)
  • Rheilffordd Talyllyn Railway (17.0 miles)
  • CADW - Harlech Castle (21.1 miles)

National Trust

  • Ty^ Mawr Wybrnant (27.0 miles)
