Dyfi Adventure Campsite: River Dyfi

General

  • Peaceful Dyfi valley site by a riverside, opened in 2019
  • A 15-minute drive from Machynlleth and 35 from the seaside at Barmouth
  • River beach, communal firepits and barbecues/campfires allowed

What might you adventurously fancy first when you arrive at Dyfi Adventure Campsite? A hike off into the Welsh hills, mountains and lush green countryside of the Dyfi valley? A hurtle down acclaimed mountain biking trails… or climbing to heady heights around the trails of Snowdonia National Park just to the north…?

Or you might care to take things most easily instead... If your sense of adventure extends to peace, quiet and beaches, all is sorted here too: Dyfi Adventure is in a land of spectacular views and gentle strolls, next to the River Dyfi for waterside ambles, paddles and a lounge on the riverside beach. More beaches – wide, wild and sandy – are within driving distance at Aberdyfi and Barmouth, each 35 minutes away.

And then? An evening around the campfire, but of course – both campfires and barbecues are sensibly allowed here and there’s a communal firepit if you’re still feeling sociable after your day mountain biking (bragging encouraged).

The closest big town for supplies is Machynlleth, 15 minutes’ drive away.

Please note that this site has a quiet hours policy in place after 10pm (there should be no noise at all after 11).

Please note

At least one of the party members must be aged 18 or over.

No bachelor/bachelorette parties permitted via Pitchup.com.

Please note that the toilet/shower facilities are unisex.

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

Guests are advised to bring a good quality torch with them as parts of the campground/park are unlit.

There is no reception building on-site: on arrival please contact the number provided on your booking confirmation.

Very well maintained and spacious pitches. Quiet and family friendly, everyone respectful of each other and the environment. Great idea to have free fire pits and amazing location by the river. The staff are thoughtful about every element of their site from the layout, the way the cut the grass to the information displayed around the site. The toilets and showers were the cleanest I've ever seen as a camper and the shower was nice and hot with good pressure. We loved the added sink to do dishes too. Beautiful location in the valley and close to the river. We wouldn't hesitate to come back next time we're camping!

The location is isolated and scenic - great for dark skies and meteor spotting.
The best thing undoubtedly is the river, great for swimming in as clear and (in places) deep for decent swimming. Also spotted a dipper and a kingfisher whilst there.
Also a decent mobile phone/4g signal (for Vodafone at least) as that was the deciding factor for me between this and one other location.
    Price also very reasonable.

    Disliked:

Nothing really, more suggestions: an info board with things like: nearest shop, pub, pharmacy etc, maybe "things to do" etc? Possibly an honesty box for some mineral water as lack of drinking water is really the only significant downside though the campsite flags it pretty clearly.

Level pitches, lovely spring water, shame about the kennels over the r08/27/2022

Starry skies on clear nights, location with easy access to nearby towns like Mach, Dolgellau, Aberdyfi. Flat, large pitches and spacious layout. Lovely lane to wander down and enjoy ripe blackberries. Occasionally low flying RAF made an exciting spectacle. Deliciously soft spring water and delightful riverside location. Hearing the owls at night was a joy.

    Disliked:

Slightly confusing check in. We texted Sian as per instructions posted at the entrance. We looked hard- there are no clear instructions to choose one’s own pitch. Litter left at the pitch we liked by previous occupants, so a quick tidy up required. Mostly though, the nearby kennels across the river were very noisy- hearing stressed dogs barking is not very relaxing. Showers are hot but a little too rustic, closing the gaps to ensure privacy and making the shower and toilet cubicles a little larger would be welcome additions. Lastly, we never met Sian and so couldn’t put these points across. It’s the first campsite we’ve used where the host had been absent. The main road can be a little intrusive.

Everything! Site was amazing, we got their late but there was 1 pitch left for us, the river was lovely, had a nice foot treatment from the fishies and it was deep enough in places for a swim! Kids loved it! Toilets and showers were lovely and clean! Always stocked up with toilet roll too!
Fire pits were great especially because not every site allows them. You feel like you’re in the middle of nowhere but also have the convenience of have a shop/small town 15/20 min drive away!
The pitches were lovely and flat too!
Other campers were nice and friendly, kids had such a good time! Everyone was quiet by 11pm or before. One morning we woke up to sheep right outside our tent which was nice! Owners done great at keeping everything clean and tidy, when the bins got untidy they came round and tidied them up, also left bin bags tied to the gate for people to use. Really is a great family campsite, we will 100% be back!

Local attractions

Start off with a stroll to the Old Coach House just over a mile away: it’s not a pub as the name would suggest, but a carefully managed wildlife garden open to the public and a lush landscape for birds and insects. The garden has a small pond, flower and vegetable beds, beehives and shaded seating areas – take a stroll round then settle down for a cream tea.

More energetically, the Dyfi valley is stellar mountain biking land in the land around  Machynlleth and the Dyfi forest. Hire a bike and helmet in town if you haven’t brought your own, then set off on the nine and a half-mile Cli-mach X trail around the southern part of the forest, or go for one of the Mach trails setting out from Machynlleth.

A day in Machynlleth should also be slotted into your schedule, to spend an afternoon around the swish Centre for Alternative Technology or picking up Welsh produce at the big Wednesday market. If you’re a hiker rather than a biker, walking paths cut through the town too: set off on the 135-mile Glyndwr's Way running through Powys from Knighton to Welshpool, or the 108 miles of the Dyfi Valley Way, meandering all the way along the River Dyfi and back down the other bank.

Must see

  • MOMA Wales - Y Tabernacl (13.1 kilometres)
  • Rheilffordd Talyllyn Railway (27.4 kilometres)
  • CADW - Harlech Castle (34.0 kilometres)
