Hayfield Glamping and Camping: Bell tents

General

  • Exclusive meadow glamping site in Powys countryside near Welshpool
  • A 20-minute drive to Powis Castle; Snowdonia National Park 50 minutes
  • Kitchenettes, firepits and Offa’s Dyke Path on site; pubs nearby

A small and peaceful family-run site in Powys, Hayfield Glamping and Camping is in pole position for exploring Mid Wales, sitting between Welshpool, Oswestry and Shrewsbury. It’s in a rural location, surrounded by poplar trees, and yet easily accessible off the A483 – and right on Offa’s Dyke Path if you fancy exploring on foot.

To add to the serene, wild-camping vibe of the place, there’s no wifi connection or electricity on site. However, if you do need to get back in touch with the world, never fear – emergency phone charging is on hand.

Accommodation is in natty, pre-erected bell tents, with a variety of sleeping configurations to suit your needs. Linen is provided for the double beds but bring your own bedding for the kids (as well as towels), and the tents are kitted out with cosy matting and log burners to take the edge of cooler evenings – they come with a complimentary basket of logs and extra firewood can be purchased on site.

Basic cooking facilities are provided under an awning, as well as a cool box to store your supplies, and there’s outdoor seating so you can hunker down around the firepit – and well-behaved pooches are welcome to join you too.

So you can cook on site – pick up supplies in the convenience store in Four Crosses (five minutes’ walk), but if you’re keen to sample some top local grub, there are fine country pubs, a Chinese takeaway and a fish and chip shop in the village too.

Please note

The site only allows dogs up to 20kg.

Please note that the toilet/shower facilities are unisex.

Guests are advised to bring a good quality torch with them as parts of the site are unlit.

Continental touring caravans (caravans built with the door on the right-hand side) are not permitted.

At least one of the party members must be aged 21 or over.

Your dog must be tattooed or microchipped.

Guests under the age of 3 are not allowed on site.

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act (i.e. Pit Bull Terrier, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino, and Fila Brasileiro).

No hen/stag parties permitted via Pitchup.com.

No cars/motorbikes by the pitch/unit. All cars must be parked in the designated area.

The site caters for families (immediate members) and couples only - bookings from all other forms of groups are not accepted.

If we had known how cosy and comfortable our stay would be we'd have stayed at least another night! Great value for money. With so much included in the tent already. A home from home. Very cute boho decor, with cosy fairy lights and a fantastic wood burner inside. A fab breakfast bap in the morning made by the Campsite Owners was just the icing on the cake for us. Would highly recommend to any couple looking to get away for a romantic break. Lots to see and do nearby. Nice hot outdoor shower and compost bin didnt put us off add we'd definitely like to go back.

    Disliked:

No real faults to the site in general, just did not see the sign on the gate upon entering. He's told us he'll be upgrading to a bigger sign soon. We can't wait to see it again.

I loved this thoughtfully put together campsite. The level field has been left as a natural meadow with a line of trees running the length of it. We received a very warm welcome and Phil was a friendly and attentive host who charged our phones and even dried our wet clothes for us. We were able to purchase logs and have a fire in one of the purpose made fire pits. Although we didn't stay in one the bell tents looked incredible, much better quality than ones we've seen at other campsites. There is a compost toilet, a really good hot shower and a belfast sink for washing, all beautiful built.
It's location was perfect for us as it is only just off the Offa's dyke path which we were walking. There is also a shop just around the corner so we could easily replenish our food stocks.

Local attractions

Four Crosses is right on Offa’s Dyke Path, making it an ideal stopover for serious hikers. If you’re hoping to venture into the wilder countryside of Mid Wales, head for the Berwyn Hills (40 minutes’ drive) for challenging rambles, or you can head further north to Snowdonia National Park (50 minutes).

If you’d like to up the culture factor, Limeworks Heritage Area (five minutes) reveals a landscape shaped by quarrying and is home to a rare Hoffmann lime kiln. Welshpool (15 minutes) is a cute Georgian market town with waterside walks along 18th-century Montgomery Canal and a cluster of local history museums to dip into. Close by you can visit not one – but two – National Trust properties with celebrated formal gardens – both Powis (20 minutes) and Chirk (30 minutes) castles have equally impressive interiors open for tours.

If the kids are fretting at all this talk of history, give them a day of animal encounters, tractor rides and outdoor play at Park Hall Countryside Experience (20 minutes), where they can burn off energy safely. If they’re still over-full of beans, book tubing sessions on the Dee river at Llangollen (35 minutes) to really wear them out.

  • Much Wenlock Priory (24.6 miles)
