  • Adults-only geodesic dome stays at a Powys hillside location
  • Montgomery Canal walks five minutes' drive; 35 minutes to Lake Vyrnwy
  • Private outdoor space with bath, sofa, barbecue and firepit
High up on a hilltop about two miles from the village of Llanymynech, the geodesic domes at Brynmawr Retreat have fabulous views across the Powys countryside and over to the neighbouring Shropshire hills. The views alone might be enough to entice you to this peaceful little adults-only site, but there’s more… because the owners of this place have designed everything to help you make the most of the setting and the fresh air. Each dome has its own outdoor space, with a table and chairs for your morning coffees, a comfy sofa for sunset drinks and a wonderful outdoor bath for a gorgeous soak under star-filled skies. There’s also a barbecue and firepit for alfresco cooking and keeping warm. Keeping warm inside the dome is also an option, as it’s got a woodburning stove with firewood provided. A double bed, sofa and kitchen area are also in the dome, and there’s a flush toilet just outside; showers are a little walk away, with towels provided. This spot makes a wonderful base for exploring the area, perhaps checking out Oswestry and Shrewsbury, taking walks at Lake Vyrnwy and along the Offa’s Dyke Path or visiting attractions like Powis Castle and British Ironwork Centre. Closer to home, Llanymynech has pubs and takeaways for those days when you don’t fancy cooking.

Local attractions

Inspired by the views from the site? There are some great walks and bike rides in the area, including trails that take you along the banks of the Montgomery Canal or on the Offa’s Dyke Path (both of which pass through Llanymynech (five minutes’ drive). Lake Vyrnwy (35 minutes) is another place that’s wonderful for walkers, or you could head to Pistyll Rhaeadr waterfall (also 35 minutes). As for manmade attractions, the towering Pontcysyllte Aqueduct (40 minutes) may well take top billing, but you should also consider outings to National Trust - Powis Castle and Garden (25 minutes), Chirk Castle (35 minutes) and the wonderful metallic creations at the British Ironwork Centre (20 minutes). For urban wanders, the local towns of Welshpool (15 minutes) and Oswestry (20 minutes) are good bets – you may be able to ride the Cambrian Heritage Railway from the latter. Shrewsbury (35 minutes) is another option, with a castle and an abbey in the centre and Wroxeter Roman City and Attingham Park close by.
