There are some great walks and bike rides in the area, including trails that take you along the banks of the Montgomery Canal or on the Offa’s Dyke Path (both of which pass through Llanymynech (five minutes’ drive). Lake Vyrnwy (35 minutes) is another place that’s wonderful for walkers, or you could head to Pistyll Rhaeadr waterfall (also 35 minutes). As for manmade attractions, the towering Pontcysyllte Aqueduct (40 minutes) may well take top billing, but you should also consider outings to National Trust - Powis Castle and Garden (25 minutes), Chirk Castle (35 minutes) and the wonderful metallic creations at the British Ironwork Centre (20 minutes). For urban wanders, the local towns of Welshpool (15 minutes) and Oswestry (20 minutes) are good bets – you may be able to ride the Cambrian Heritage Railway from the latter. Shrewsbury (35 minutes) is another option, with a castle and an abbey in the centre and Wroxeter Roman City and Attingham Park close by.
