  • Relaxed and rural dog-friendly site with plenty of space and seclusion
  • A 10-minute walk to Llangammarch Wells and its train station
  • Heart of Wales Line Trail and the Via Beata route within 10 minutes
Fancy opting for something a little more offbeat than usual for your next trip to Mid Wales? Enter the eclectic Irfon Valley Pods and Camping, part of a smallholding scattered with curios collected by the owner. Free-roaming chickens, geese and ducks are also to be seen in the adjacent field at this park a 10-minute walk from the centre of Llangammarch Wells. In fact, it’s all about the relaxed rural pursuits here with guests taking on activities including walking in the wildlife-rich surrounds, dining alfresco on the site’s picnic tables and cosying up around the large campfire with eyes turned skyward in search of the red kites that often fly overhead. As for travelling to this Powys park, those without a car will be chuffed to know they can ask the driver of the bus from Builth Wells (15 minutes’ drive) to drop them right at the front door. The entrance of the site is easy to spot – just look out for the couple of cutout giraffes peering over the fence. A railway station is half a mile away too and the village has access points to two long-distance footpaths: the 140-mile Heart of Wales Line Trail and the Via Beata route from Lowestoft in Suffolk to St Davids in Pembrokeshire. There's a smart loo block on site with three toilets, a shower and three washing-up sinks. There's also a communal room with games and a shared fridge, microwave and kettle. There's also an outdoor cold shower.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Lovely couple who welcomed us. It was raining very heavily, when we got there for a tent pitch they were very accommodating when we asked to upgrade to daisy pod. The pod saved us, very comfortable beds, heater and perfect outside cooking area. The facilities were very clean and well looked after. Our son 6 loved the little museum on site, full of vintage and antique oddities.

Disliked: It’s was a shame to cold water shower wasn’t working as we do cold water therapy and would have enjoyed that. The distant artillery fire from the near by MOD was interesting and might wake lighter sleepers.

From the manager: Thank you for your photos and review, we're glad we had a pod available in that downpour - much dryer than the tent! We're also glad that you enjoyed the small museum of bits and bobs. We hope to see you again!

Electric grass campervan pitch

Liked: Welcoming friendly couple, amenities block was clean and well looked after.

Disliked: Hard standing was too small (VW T5) fit on snug which meant that walking around it churned up the mud - visit end of March/April wet weather. Child play area great idea but swing unsafe. Sign on entry isn’t obvious so we drove straight past.

From the manager: Thank you for your review, it is appreciated. We're sorry your stay didn't come up to your expectations, as we find that most reviews put us between 9 and 10, and we have a high percentage of repeat customers. Thank you for raising issues that require attention, these will be addressed, and the hard standing will be made wider.

Daffodil camping pod

Liked: Fantastic little site with lots of character. Spotless new toilets and shower. Friendly helpful host. POD was clean and warm on a very cold night. Shame it wasn’t less wintery as it’d have great to enjoy the evening sat on the porch with the fire pit. We will definitely return when staying in the area again.

From the manager: Thank you for your review. It was certainly cold when you were here, so we're glad the heater kept you warm! We look forward to seeing you again on your next biking event!

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: We loved this site for our first time camping as a family of 5! We really liked that it is enclosed, that there is plenty of space to run and play! The tents are well spread out for some Privacy, the showers and toilets were clean and washing facilities too! Also that there was a communal space if needed with a shared fridge 👍 also the added bonus of outdoor games/toys and a small play area. All that and the animals made this a perfect stay for us!! And we enjoyed our first time camping (even in the rainy night weather!)

Disliked: Nothing to dislike! Our legs might have disliked the extra steps with the wheelbarrow to and from the car but we burned off the toasted marshmallows!!

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thanks for your review Laura. We're glad you enjoyed your stay here. The rain at night was just to make the Welsh experience a little more authentic. We keep cars off the camping area, so it's a good job you brought your energy giving marshmallows, even if it wasn't that far to walk!! (I think that camping without marshmallows is a bookable offense anyway!)

Local attractions

Stunning views are to be had at every turn on short drives to spots like Llanwrtyd Wells (10 minutes), home of the laughter-inducing World Bog Snorkelling Championships and Man versus Horse Marathon. Builth Wells (15 minutes) is also known for hosting a famed event: Europe's largest agricultural show, the Royal Welsh Show. Not about in the summer while it’s on? Embark on an escapade to the Elan Valley (35 minutes) instead for dawdles among the dams and lakes that supply water to the Midlands. The Brecon Beacons National Park is around the same distance away for wanders in some of Wales’ prettiest landscapes; closer by (10 minutes) are forays to the forest of Crychan, which also hosts car rallies and horse riding events.
