General
- Wild camping on a Powys farm with spectacular hill and valley views
- Five minutes’ drive to Fishpools Forest; half an hour to Elan Valley
- Basic facilities and grass pitches, plus a donkey, horses and sheep
What’s the best thing about Coco’s Wild Camp? The spectacular setting in 400 acres of Powys hill country? The utter peace on site? Or the wildlife you may spot? In fact, it’s probably a combination of all three aspects that makes this spot near Llandrindod Wells a most desirable escape from the hurly-burly of everyday life.
This is a place for contemplation of the near-endless views and a place to enjoy walking in gorgeous countryside. On your ambles, watch red kites hover above the hills, and look out for hares and rabbits running around in the fields. You may be lucky enough to spot a deer, too.
And if you don’t spot any wildlife, you can always interact with all the friendly farm animals – sheep, horses and goats included. The star of the show here is undoubtedly Coco, the donkey who lends his name to the place, who will soon have you all beguiled with his antics – especially if you feed him free carrots from the site shop.
As this is proper wild camping, amenities on site don’t stretch much beyond compost loos – please note there are no showers and no electricity – but what you will experience is amazing sunsets on clear nights, followed by starry, starry skies. Sunset is your cue to gather around the firepit and get set to watch the Milky Way glittering above.

Local attractions
As you’re surrounded by Powys hills, it may be hard to know where to start exploring – if you’re on foot, Fishpools Forest (five minutes’ drive) is a good option, with a slew of way-marked woodland walks leading past lakes and hilly viewpoints to waterfalls including Water Break-Its-Neck (25 minutes).
Another option nearby is Elan Valley (half an hour), where hikes lead to a series of awe-inspiring Victorian dams, and there are scenic picnic spots by the side of River Marteg in Gilfach Nature Reserve (both half an hour).
On two wheels? Saintswell Practice Track and Race Centre (half an hour) has MX tracks from gentle to challenging. Prefer to get active on the water? There are kayaks and rowing boats for rent at Llandrindod Lake (20 minutes) – just be sure to keep a look out for the Welsh dragon sculpture spouting water instead of fire in the middle of the lake.
Curious kids may appreciate trips to Valley View Falconry (20 minutes) to handle birds of prey and see them fly, or guided tours (May to October only) of the observatory at The Spaceguard Centre (25 minutes) to learn about asteroids and comets.
