General

  • Wild camping on a Powys farm with spectacular hill and valley views
  • Five minutes’ drive to Fishpools Forest; half an hour to Elan Valley
  • Basic facilities and grass pitches, plus a donkey, horses and sheep

What’s the best thing about Coco’s Wild Camp? The spectacular setting in 400 acres of Powys hill country? The utter peace on site? Or the wildlife you may spot? In fact, it’s probably a combination of all three aspects that makes this spot near Llandrindod Wells a most desirable escape from the hurly-burly of everyday life.

This is a place for contemplation of the near-endless views and a place to enjoy walking in gorgeous countryside. On your ambles, watch red kites hover above the hills, and look out for hares and rabbits running around in the fields. You may be lucky enough to spot a deer, too.

And if you don’t spot any wildlife, you can always interact with all the friendly farm animals – sheep, horses and goats included. The star of the show here is undoubtedly Coco, the donkey who lends his name to the place, who will soon have you all beguiled with his antics – especially if you feed him free carrots from the site shop.

As this is proper wild camping, amenities on site don’t stretch much beyond compost loos – please note there are no showers and no electricity – but what you will experience is amazing sunsets on clear nights, followed by starry, starry skies. Sunset is your cue to gather around the firepit and get set to watch the Milky Way glittering above.

Please note

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act (i.e. Pit Bull Terrier, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino, and Fila Brasileiro).

This site has no on-site shower facilities.

There is no reception on-site: on arrival please contact the number provided on your booking confirmation.

Very relaxed site and owner, just turn up and park where you like, the track up to the site is a little rough but if you take your time is no issue at all. Wasn't brave enough to go beyond Hill 2 on our stay as it was a little wet and windy didn't want to get stuck! Hill 2 had a compost toilet, chemical toilet waste facility and the coco diner so was happy to stay on that hill, even with the misty weather the view was still beautiful. Will definitely return and hopefully be able to spend a little more time outside with a firepit etc.

    Disliked:

Nothing, definitely enjoyed the wild camping and try something different compared to usual sites. Just be aware when they say wild camping this is what they mean, don't expect a shower / toilet block!

Location, location, location! Parked up here in the campervan with grandson & dog. Made it up to level 2 then stopped near the 'Diner' on a flat bit as it was quite wet. You can walk a few miles just around the site - it is huge. Afraid to drive up to level 3 as it was wet and slippery. Site owner's 4x4 was having no problem. Was expecting a field and got a whole mountain. Views are amazing. Bonus was the 'Diner' - had delicious chips with burger and hot dog in the evening and the ultimate breakfast in the morning. Not sure if they are there all the time - it was a Bank Holiday weekend with weather to match. There was a shop too at the entrance but an awful long way to walk back from the level 2 camping. Would advise buying a kite there on the way in if you don't have one to bring as grandson was wishing he had one too when other kids had them flying but couldn't face the walk back to the shop once we'd made it half way up the hill.
Compost toilets were clean and not smelly. Lit with fairy lights when you're sitting on the throne after dark. Some waste disposal tanks. Didn't see a tap but had brought our own water. No bins so remember a rubbish bag to take it away with you. Firepits, kindling and wood available.

    Disliked:

Pity the weather was typical for a Bank Holiday in August. In good weather this site would be even more fabulous.

Local attractions

As you’re surrounded by Powys hills, it may be hard to know where to start exploring – if you’re on foot, Fishpools Forest (five minutes’ drive) is a good option, with a slew of way-marked woodland walks leading past lakes and hilly viewpoints to waterfalls including Water Break-Its-Neck (25 minutes).

Another option nearby is Elan Valley (half an hour), where hikes lead to a series of awe-inspiring Victorian dams, and there are scenic picnic spots by the side of River Marteg in Gilfach Nature Reserve (both half an hour).

On two wheels? Saintswell Practice Track and Race Centre (half an hour) has MX tracks from gentle to challenging. Prefer to get active on the water? There are kayaks and rowing boats for rent at Llandrindod Lake (20 minutes) – just be sure to keep a look out for the Welsh dragon sculpture spouting water instead of fire in the middle of the lake.

Curious kids may appreciate trips to Valley View Falconry (20 minutes) to handle birds of prey and see them fly, or guided tours (May to October only) of the observatory at The Spaceguard Centre (25 minutes) to learn about asteroids and comets.
