Coco's Wild Camp: Visitor image of the amazing sunrise

General

  • Wild camping on a Powys farm with spectacular hill and valley views
  • Five minutes’ drive to Fishpools Forest; half an hour to Elan Valley
  • Basic facilities and grass pitches, plus a donkey, horses and sheep

What’s the best thing about Coco’s Wild Camp? The spectacular setting in 400 acres of Powys hill country? The utter peace on site? Or the wildlife you may spot? In fact, it’s probably a combination of all three aspects that makes this spot near Llandrindod Wells a most desirable escape from the hurly-burly of everyday life.

This is a place for contemplation of the near-endless views and a place to enjoy walking in gorgeous countryside. On your ambles, watch red kites hover above the hills, and look out for hares and rabbits running around in the fields. You may be lucky enough to spot a deer, too.

And if you don’t spot any wildlife, you can always interact with all the friendly farm animals – sheep, horses and goats included. The star of the show here is undoubtedly Coco, the donkey who lends his name to the place, who will soon have you all beguiled with his antics – especially if you feed him free carrots from the site shop.

As this is proper wild camping, amenities on site don’t stretch much beyond compost loos – please note there are no showers and no electricity – but what you will experience is amazing sunsets on clear nights, followed by starry, starry skies. Sunset is your cue to gather around the firepit and get set to watch the Milky Way glittering above.

Please note

Guests are advised to bring a good quality torch with them as parts of the campground/park are unlit.

The campground/park does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dog Act (i.e. Pit Bull Terrier, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino, and Fila Brasileiro).

The scenery was spectacular, especially the night sky.. So many Red Kites circled above us . Lots of space and no limit to your pitch size.. Dog friendly site at no extra charge..Campfires were encouraged and compost loos are always a bonus.. The hosts were very welcoming and friendly and of course you cannot love coco the donkey...

    Disliked:

Local dogs that barked most of the night, keeping us awake on our first evening .. Please note these were NOT the dogs on the campsite but local dogs in the valley... However the following evening they were not as bad..

Although it was extremely busy (August bank holiday weekend and sunshine) we still managed to find a semi secluded spot. Not a sunset spot like we was hoping.
We have been to a few camp sites this summer and this was the best (no showers but we knew when booking) we take our own toilet so didn’t use theirs. Kids rides around on quad bikes and a Land Rover every hour it seemed Selling ice cream, wood and other bits. It was nice if you like that kind of thing, the kids got an ice cream. Although m we prefer to be alone when camping. Sheep around grazing in the fields so lots of poop.
If you buy wood you can borrow a fire pit, wood was chopped up old pallets so went quick, luckily they don’t mind you gathering dead wood from around.
The campsite itself it’s massive with even more fields around. Great views.

    Disliked:

Was spot on, considering a very busy weekend still plenty of space between pitches if you don’t mind taking 20 mins to find your ideal spot. This is not a dislike.

The views were absolutely out of this world. I have never stayed anywhere with such stunning scenery. Absolutely incredible. Little shop on site for essentials. Loved the food van that delivers to your pitch! Loads of places to pitch, but do make sure you bring your levellers as being on a mountain means you’re likely to be a little uneven! Loved every bit of this place. I had great phone signal the higher I went!

Free fire pits and logs available to buy from site shop. Animals are a wonderful addition and Coco the resident donkey stole the show. Would definitely recommend and planning a second visit sometime soon. Thanks everyone 😊

Local attractions

As you’re surrounded by Powys hills, it may be hard to know where to start exploring – if you’re on foot, Fishpools Forest (five minutes’ drive) is a good option, with a slew of way-marked woodland walks leading past lakes and hilly viewpoints to waterfalls including Water Break-Its-Neck (25 minutes).

Another option nearby is Elan Valley (half an hour), where hikes lead to a series of awe-inspiring Victorian dams, and there are scenic picnic spots by the side of River Marteg in Gilfach Nature Reserve (both half an hour).

On two wheels? Saintswell Practice Track and Race Centre (half an hour) has MX tracks from gentle to challenging. Prefer to get active on the water? There are kayaks and rowing boats for rent at Llandrindod Lake (20 minutes) – just be sure to keep a look out for the Welsh dragon sculpture spouting water instead of fire in the middle of the lake.

Curious kids may appreciate trips to Valley View Falconry (20 minutes) to handle birds of prey and see them fly, or guided tours (May to October only) of the observatory at The Spaceguard Centre (25 minutes) to learn about asteroids and comets.

Must see

  • Stokesay Castle (28.7 kilometres)
  • Ludlow Castle (33.4 kilometres)
  • Powis Castle & Garden (38.2 kilometres)
