  • Quiet, sheltered site surrounded by forests next to the river Ystwyth
  • Aberystwyth and Devil's Bridge Falls within 15 minutes' drive
  • Free fly fishing on 15 miles of river; no licence needed
Pretty and peaceful Dolau Afon Camping is in a fabulous Ceredigion setting in the foothills of the Cambrian mountains, about 15 minutes’ drive from Aberystwyth. This small, friendly site caters to families, couples and solo travellers only – no groups – and is part of a family-run smallholding that dates back more than 200 years, stretching out over three acres of what was once the Trawsgoed Estate. This is a most serene spot, surrounded by forests and on the banks of the Ystwyth river – and as such it’s a top choice for outdoor activities with a scenic backdrop. Such outings might include walks or bike rides on the numerous footpaths, bridleways and forest paths nearby, or lengthier pedals along National Cycle Route 81, which passes very close to the site. The site has a fishing licence, so guests here can go fly fishing on the 15 miles of riverbank. Such peaceful surrounds are maintained by keeping facilities low-key, so the husband-and-wife team here have focused their attentions on the essentials, setting up a smart toilet block with heating, hair dryer, shaving point and family space, and making sure guests have access to drinking water, chemical disposal, dog wash and other handy bits. Barbecues are permitted on site, and there’s a social area with a picnic table and firepit that’s just the spot for evening drinks and snacks.

What customers say

This small, quiet site is praised for its beautiful riverside location and meticulously clean facilities, including showers and toilets. It serves as a good base for exploring the local area. River access is a popular feature for children. Some guests found the number of toilet and shower facilities to be limited during busier periods. Owners are described as welcoming and helpful, though a few guests found them to be abrupt. Communal fire pit available, personal fire pits are not permitted.

Electric grass pitch

Liked A really beautiful, tranquil location - just a little road noise but quiet by late evening. A path leads down to the babbling river below the campsite.
Big pitches & spotless facilities. We chose a weekday night with just one other campervan staying. Very helpful owners, Vernon gave us all the information we needed and his wife was just a joy!
Would love to return with my husband for a walking weekend as there are so many woodland tracks from the camp site.

Patio electric hardstanding touring pitch

Liked Nice, simple and well maintained campsite with lots of luscious green grass, in a charming and peaceful location. Lovely friendly owners, and spacious facilities, and not too many plots which is right up our street!

We had the patio pitch which we sadly didnt fully utilise as we were so busy exploring the area but it was still lovely to know we had the space if we needed it.

There isnt much for children to do but as we go away to spend time with them, thats a plus for us!

Disliked There are only 3 sit down toilets and 2 of these are also the (only 2) shower rooms. This means the morning 'rush' is a challenge as showerers wait for toilet users and vice versa, and there forms a queue by the facilities block... as well as the unavoidable smells if youre showering after a toileter!

There is only one washing up sink which wasnt a problem on this occasion but could foresee a wait at busy times!

Electric grass pitch

Liked Lovely quiet spot next to the river with easy access to nearby places of interest. This site is very much geared up for the comfort of campers! Fabulous facilities kept lovely and clean and nicely decorated with thoughtful touches like beautiful paintings, shelves and plenty of hooks, even a stool in the shower! Site in general is immaculately maintained, well equipped and pitches are spacious, all pretty much equal in distance to the facilities. Washing up area with very useful fridge/freezer for ice packs etc. Well done all round!

Liked Peaceful site close to river toilets/showers ok

Disliked Only 1 toilet/shower accessible 2 others locked photos of river need updating showed a beach area not there

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: We are really disappointed that you were not 100% happy staying on our site, which is surprising really, as 99% of people have said they do enjoy it. You would recommend to friends, but wouldn't stay again yourselves, that's a bit odd!

There are 3 toilets, 2 showers and 2 urinals. I was not aware that the horsebox shower/toilet was locked, it was only a case of turning a knob to open it or coming to tell us and we would have opened it straight away. As for cleanliness, I am offended by that, we pride ourselves in its cleanliness and 100% of all reviews say how clean the facilities are and how great the showers are. As for you saying we have poor customer services, I'm also offended by that, as I was there to greet you on arrival, we had a nice chat, I showed you where everything was etc. but you didn't say what I did wrong?
As for the river, you obviously don't know about Spate rivers - they rise and fall very quickly with the amount of rainfall - it will be very shallow and a beach is revealed as in the photos in dry weather, but when there is a lot of rain, like there has been this week when you stayed, the river fills up and the beach goes. We cannot do anything about Nature I'm afraid; besides, it is now Autumn, and we get a lo of rain, it is Wales after all. However, it has been a fantastic summer, very dry and the river had been at its lowest for more than a decade this year, and our campers have enjoyed the low river and its beach for swimming and messing about.
As for location/value for money/facilities, you will have seen all this on PitchUp when you booked, I'm wondering why you booked at all, then saw fit to complain after you paid the money, but location..... did you not look on a map to see where we were? (its a fantastic location) yet you still booked????
Thank you for the poor review, maybe you should read the information on sites and communicate with the site owners, you might have a nicer time and will not be disappointed with your stay.
