Pretty and peaceful Dolau Afon Camping is in a fabulous Ceredigion setting in the foothills of the Cambrian mountains, about 15 minutes’ drive from Aberystwyth. This small, friendly site is part of a family-run smallholding that dates back more than 200 years, stretching out over three acres of what was once the Trawsgoed Estate. This is a most serene spot, surrounded by forests and on the banks of the Ystwyth river – and as such it’s a top choice for outdoor activities with a scenic backdrop. Such outings might include walks or bike rides on the numerous footpaths, bridleways and forest paths nearby, or lengthier pedals along National Cycle Route 81, which passes very close to the site. Not that you have to exit the site to get stuck into the rural antics: the smallholding provides its guests with a complimentary (mandatory) local fishing licence that will allow you to go fly fishing on a fab 15 miles of riverbank. If you prefer being on the water than by it, you’re welcome to take a little dip in the river from the site instead (particularly welcome after a hefty hike, no doubt). Such peaceful surrounds are maintained by keeping facilities low-key, so the husband-and-wife team here have focused their attentions on the essentials, setting up a smart toilet block with heating, hair dryer, shaving point and family space, and making sure guests have access to drinking water, chemical disposal, dog wash and other handy bits. Barbecues are permitted on site, and there’s a communal firepit area for guests to use.

Gostou What a gem of a site. We loved it so much we tried to book again for next weekend when we got back home but unfortunately there's no availability. The site is beautifully maintained, we didn't need to use the facilities but everything looked immaculate. We were greeted on arrival and the whereabouts of everything explained. There's access to the river directly from the site and a beautiful spot to swim, the water was crystal clear. There are fantastic walks starting just yards from the site in lovely wooded areas, our dogs loved it. The site is directly off a road but we did not find the noise level intrusive at all and we certainly didn't hear any noise during the night. This is a lovely family and doggy friendly site and a beautiful area to explore.

Gostou Lovely quiet spot surrounded by trees. The small site is just right if you want something out of the way. Facilities were spotlessly clean and very well kept. The addition of the patio and the hammock made the afternoon much more enjoyable

Gostou Immaculate site, grass and vegetation kept beautifully. Showers/bathrooms very clean and well maintained. Access and gate good. Price reasonable.

Não gostou Being fairly remote (8+ miles from Aberystwyth) meant local roads twisty and at times quite narrow.

Do gerente: We are very sorry that you did not feel welcome, surprising really, as on arrival we had a nice conversation as I recall! I came over to see you when you were setting up to make conversation, and give you a food waste bin and I was amused that you had such a large tent for 2 people, you told me that you had lent them the tent. I also asked if you were happy with the pitches - Oh well?
Your elderly 70 year old dad was actually on the same pitch as the rest of you. As some of your party booked on different days, I was not to know you were all together when you arrived especially as other people not in your party arrived at the same time as you.
Were also sorry you felt on edge, I cannot comment on how you felt, but 99% of the reviews we get are very happy campers.
Were the 2 that left early the ones that booked fewer nights than yourselves?

Gostou Such a lovely site and nice owners. Smaller than expected this was great. Facilities were good ample and kept clean. Great location, own path to river and quiet countryside. Would stay again if in the area. Worth the price

Atrações locais

Up for exploring the surroundings? There are lots of great walking trails and footpaths around, along with National Cycle Route 81 for the cyclists. A couple of favourite routes nearby include the trail to Devil’s Bridge Falls (15 minutes’ drive) and the routes from Bwlch Nant yr Arian Forest Visitor Centre (25 minutes). A little further away but worth the trip is the Elan Valley (50 minutes). Also close by are the medieval Strata Florida Abbey (10 minutes) and the chance to see some magnificent beasts up close at the Red Kite Feeding Station (50 minutes). For kids, Fantasy Farm Park (25 minutes) is a great choice – they’ll get to use the indoor and outdoor play areas as well as meeting lots of cute animals. Over at the coast, there’s a lovely beach in Borth (half an hour) and plenty to do in Aberystwyth (15 minutes) – the town has a castle, several museums and a classic cliff railway, and it’s also the start point for the Vale of Rheidol Railway for scenic journeys to Devil’s Bridge Falls.
