  • Small campsite with views of the Preseli Hills in rural Ceredigion
  • A 15-minute drive to Cardigan, with several beaches 20 minutes away
  • Working farm site with a communal kitchen; shops and pubs close by
A small and friendly wild campsite on a working farm, Capel Tygwydd Camping and Caravans has truly spectacular views across the Preseli Hills. Families, dogs and kids – all are welcome at owner Farmer Gordon’s rural site in Ceredigion, with horses and cattle grazing peacefully in neighbouring fields (plus some donkeys who are particularly friendly if you happen to approach with carrots in hand…). With plenty of room up on that hilltop, you’ll never feel crowded, and with no defined pitches, you can pick a spot that works for you. There's parking by your pitch, so you have no need to lug stuff across fields, and there’s a wifi connection too, so you can keep in touch with folks back home. Simple on-site amenities include a shower and loo block, plus washing-up facilities and a no-frills communal kitchen decked out with a fridge and microwave, where you can rustle up snacks and hot drinks. Pick up bits and pieces in Newcastle Emlyn (five minutes’ drive) or head off to Cardigan (15 minutes) for a bigger choice of shops. And while you’re there, stop a while to explore the Norman castle, have a stroll along the Teifi river and sink a pint in a pub – there are handy takeaways as well, serving pizzas, tacos or curries for a treat back at the camping field. The site is a 40-minute walk from the Cenarth Falls beauty spot, and you can keep travelling mutts happy with walks and splashes at dog-friendly Aberporth or Poppit Sands beaches, both less than half an hour away.

Electric grass tent pitch

Liked: This was a fabulous site, Gordon the farmer is very attentive, nothing to much trouble. This is an ideally base, we went in to Cardigan for an evening meal, bbq onsite, a large tesco and b&m aren't far, fab for when your air bed no good. Aberporth beach is lovely, also spent a day in New Quay, but lobed camping back from the busy seaside to a calm campsite. Toilets and showers are spotless. Will definitely be going back next year

It’s an easy job keeping the kids entertained on fabulous beaches at Aberporth (15 minutes’ drive), Poppit Sands (20 minutes) and Mwnt (25 minutes), and there’s plenty more for them to do as well. Book them a beastie hunt at the Welsh Wildlife Centre, and keep your eyes peeled for otters and herons on walks at Teifi Marshes Nature Reserve (both 20 minutes). Get the lowdown on local Ceredigion produce with tours and tastings at Caws Cenarth Cheese (15 minutes), or sample the organic gin flavoured with seaweed at Dà Mhìle Distillery (20 minutes) before you buy. Along with gorgeous textiles at the National Wool Museum (15 minutes), there are loads of foodie events and cocktail masterclasses (book ahead of time). As well as the long-distance Wales Coast Path (15 minutes), you can try gentler strolls around the shrubberies and orchards at eco-friendly Forest Garden Wales (five minutes) and round off an action-filled day with a relaxing chug through wooded countryside on the Teifi Valley Railway (15 minutes).
