  • Spacious site on a Ceredigion organic farm with forest views
  • A 10-minute drive to Llanrhystud beach; 20 minutes to Aberaeron
  • Horse riding available on site; dogs on leads allowed
At the end of a bumpy track in west Wales lies Mountain Farm, a real gem of a site on a peaceful organic farm that's within easy reach of fab forest walks and the spectacular Ceredigion coast. The very varied landscape here includes eminently explorable woodland, streams and wildflower meadows. You're likely to encounter Mountain Farm’s happy sheep and hens as you wander too – kids are welcome to get up close and personal with the site's permanent residents, who are known to be partial to a spot of petting. Horses can also be spotted grazing here – have a chat with the site staff if you fancy having a go in the saddle. Post cross-country cantering or coastal capers at the nearest beach (10 minutes' drive), you're allowed to light up a barbecue or firepit (off the ground, please) – handily, firewood can be purchased in the local village shop. Facilities here include a compost toilet and a washing-up station (with a bowl and cold-water tap). The pitches (in either a quieter area or a more lively one) are on grass, with cars parked away from the field so that everything's nicely safe around the accommodation area. Staff are on hand to help ferry your kit around on a quad bike or pony and cart. The site staff are a personable bunch – let them know when you plan on arriving and they'll do their best to drop by your pitch for a natter and to get you properly settled in. They're also happy to provide extra blankets on chilly nights or sort out phone charging facilities if you need them.

Route directions

DO NOT use the postcode in a satnav as it takes you to the wrong place and upsets the site's neighbours. Instead, go to the village of Llanrhystud and turn up the hill towards Lampeter. Go to the brow of the hill and you will see a sign on the left for Blaenpennal – take that turn and follow the road for three miles. You will pass a red phone box on your left. Continue for a mile to a new-build bungalow on the right. The site's track is on the right just before this, with a Mountain Farm sign. If coming through Joppa you will be turning right, not left.

Local attractions

Pumped to get out paddleboarding? The sea at Llanrhystud beach (10 minutes' drive) is often calm enough to stand up and practise propelling yourself through the water. If you feel like moving on to seal-spotting boat trips or fancy a spot of off-shore fishing, Aberaeron harbour (20 minutes) is the place to be. Any kids in your company may be keen to bounce around at Fantasy Farm Park (10 minutes), an outdoor adventure spot designed with tots and tiddlers in mind. Further family-friendly frolics are sorted at the Vale of Rheidol Railway (30 minutes), Aberystwyth Cliff Railway (30 minutes) and Bwlch Nant yr Arian Forest Visitor Centre (40 minutes), where you can watch wild red kites being fed. History-hunting folks, meanwhile, should head to Strata Florida Abbey (30 minutes), a splendid set of ruins that hark back to medieval days. Other visit-worthy pieces of the past can be seen at the castles in Aberystwyth (30 minutes), Cardigan (55 minutes) and Llandovery (an hour).
