  • Small, peaceful family-run site in the Ceredigion countryside
  • A 10-minute drive to Aberaeron; 15 minutes to New Quay
  • Village location a short walk from pub, shop and bus stop
One of the real perks of an outdoor stay is surely the chance to catch a glimpse of some wildlife in its natural habitat… and you’ve certainly got a great chance of that at Hafod Brynog Caravan and Camping Park. Guests at this small and peaceful Ceredigion park are often treated to the sight of red kites swooping low over the site. And that's not all – because although there’s green rural scenery all around this spot, it’s only a 15-minute drive to New Quay, a hub for sea safaris heading out into Cardigan Bay in search of sightings of the UK’s largest pod of bottlenose dolphins (plus seals and all sorts of sea birds). You may be tempted to think that such wildlife encounters usually involve long journeys along winding country lanes – but that's not the case here at all, as Hafod Brynog is easily accessed from the A482 in the little village of Ystrad Aeron. That edge-of-village location also means that it’s just a few minutes’ walk from the local pub, a well-stocked mini supermarket and a bus stop (for services to Aberaeron, Lampeter, New Quay and Aberystwyth). By day you may find yourselves filling hours with rural rambles, fishing and horse riding, heading to Aberaeron (10 minutes’ drive) for a beach day or wandering around Lampeter (also 10 minutes’ drive). And by night you’ll be staying at a well-kept family-run site that’s been kept fairly natural (to encourage all that wildlife) but where spacious pitches have access to toilets, showers, a washing-up area and a launderette.

Electric hardstanding and grass touring pitch

Liked: Peaceful, clean site, the pitch was easy to manoeuvre onto, toilets and showers kept clean, shower was lovely and warm, really enjoyed watching the Red Kites in the afternoon soaring over the area, we also saw, a Kestrel and after dark, a hedgehog. Very friendly staff, and reasonably price. Lovely nature walks a short drive away. Newquay only about 20 minutes away.

Disliked: No path on part of a busy road, but this was nothing to do with the site. Minor moan - Wi-Fi advertised, but it doesn’t state on the advert that you have to pay extra for it.

Local attractions

This part of the Aeron Valley has plenty of trails where walkers and cyclists can soak up some of the scenery, and you can also get out for horse rides or go fishing in nearby lakes and rivers. The National Trust’s Llanerchaeron property (five minutes’ drive) is a lovely place for a wander through the walled garden and farmyard, and the pretty displays of Cae Hir Gardens (five minutes) are also worth a visit. Over at the coast, there are lots of great places to eat in Aberaeron (10 minutes), and it’s got a busy programme of events including a seafood festival and a carnival. New Quay (15 minutes) has the Cardigan Bay Marine Wildlife Centre as well as those dolphin-spotting trips, and there are lots of beaches to try out, including Llanrhystud (20 minutes) and Llangrannog (half an hour). There’s often something going on in the university town of Lampeter (10 minutes) too, and it’s got a couple of museums and a town trail tracing the town’s importance in the history of Welsh rugby.
