Grass tent pitch
Pitches by the river
Site for walkers and bikepackers, close to route 7 and cairngorm loops
Pitches on grass

  • Peaceful setting with riverside pitches and views of the Cairngorms
  • A 15-min drive from Blair Atholl, 20 from Pitlochry and 60 from Perth
  • Semi-wild camping with hot shower plus free-range eggs for sale
Peace in Perthshire, with views of the Cairngorms? Come along to Dall Cottage Camping. The sensible folk here have set up their small site to stay as close to nature as possible, keeping the vibe as semi-wild camping in a rural wildlife haven. The site is next to the River Garry over a river ford crossing and is only accessible to walkers, cyclists and 4x4 vehicles, which means a definite remote feel as well as plenty of space… (parking and a lift in a 4x4 are available for those travelling in normal cars). And for your adventures off site? This is a stunning setting for outdoor days: on the southern edge of the Cairngorms National Park (Britain’s biggest, fact fans), a short drive from three lochs and just north of Tay Forest Park. There’s easy access to towns and cities too: Pitlochry is 20 minutes’ drive away, the Fair Trade shopping of Aberfeldy within 40, and Perth just over an hour. Blair Atholl, home to the Atholl Country Life Museum and Blair Castle, is 15 minutes from the site. Wild camping of any flavour most certainly needs fire, and the Dall Cottage team turn up trumps here too, providing firepits for guests’ use so that eats, drinks and stargazing can be done alongside toasty flames. Amenities are well thought out too: there’s a hot shower, clean and well-equipped compost toilet. Please note that only four wheel drive vehicles can be parked next to the pitch; other cars will need to be parked on the other side of the river (transport can be provided across the river on arrival and departure, but please provide the team with a time in advance).

  • Please note that the toilet/shower facilities are unisex.
  • The site caters for families (immediate members) and couples only - bookings from all other forms of groups are not accepted.
  • Bookings must not consist of more than 2 different households.

  • There is no reception on-site: on arrival please contact the number provided on your booking confirmation.
  • Access to the site is through a river across a rough un-surfaced ford, so is only suitable for 4x4 vehicles with good ground clearance: Campers on foot, bike, or trail-type motorbikes can also cross, but with caution and by experienced riders; for all other vehicles, you'll need to park on the other side of the river and use the site's 4x4 to transport your gear (please arrange this in advance). Most of the time the river is low, allowing for crossing, however, on occasion the river can rise quickly after heavy rain and be un-passable.

What customers say

This small, peaceful campsite offers a "wild camping" feel with the convenience of clean composting toilets and hot showers. Set beside a river, pitches are spacious and have fire pits. Access involves a unique river crossing, with owners providing transport if needed. An honesty shop sells essentials. While many praise the serene atmosphere and friendly hosts, some note road noise and the presence of midges. One reviewer experienced poor communication regarding group bookings.

Liked Really great campsite. Feels wild but with a nice composting toilet and shower. We used the fire pit with the bbq grills provided which worked really well. I also forgot my toothbrush and was able to buy one at the tiny honesty shop.

Liked Beautiful riverside setting with plenty of space and a peaceful atmosphere. The ford crossing in the old army jeep was a real highlight and made the adventure start from the moment we arrived. We had some rain during our stay but loved sitting under our tarp listening to the rain and river. Facilities were clean, customer service was excellent and we left already planning our next camping trip. A fantastic campsite that we'll definitely return to.

Liked Nothing unfortunately, we didn't get this far.

Disliked The biggest issue was the extremely poor communication and customer service. Our booking had been confirmed for around a month, yet we were only contacted on the day we were due to arrive and told that "groups are not tolerated." We are a small, respectful family group and had no intention of causing any disruption. We were also unaware of the restriction because the website described the site as family-friendly and welcoming groups, which made the situation even more confusing. Rather than discussing the matter professionally, we were made to feel unwelcome and were spoken to in a dismissive manner. The lady hung up on me at one point and then sent me a screen shot, with no explanation, of another page on the website which I had missed. The booking was ultimately cancelled by her on the day of our trip, after she suggested that we had booked separately to try and hide that we were a group which she finds people often do. This was not the case and caused unnecessary inconvenience and stress that could easily have been avoided with earlier and clearer communication.
This was a very disappointing experience. Regardless of a site's policies, customers deserve clear communication and respectful treatment. If there was an issue with our booking, it should have been raised weeks earlier, not on the day we were due to arrive. While I appreciate receiving a refund, that does not make up for the disruption to our plans or the way the situation was handled. Based on our experience, I would not feel confident booking with this campsite again and would encourage others to carefully check the site's policies before making arrangements.

Liked Love the wild camping feel of the site.
Large pitches with own fire pit
Honesty shop with fabulous wood
General feeling there - you know the world is around but you get to focus on the main ment.
It’s similar to wild camping - but you’ve got a loo! If you’ve ever wanted to try wild camping but not sure this is a perfect campsite to trial it on.

Disliked Having to leave!

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked Spacious pitches right beside the river and our own firepit. The owners are a wonderful couple who kindly brought out their big gentle horse to meet me, which for me was the best birthday present ever ! We've been twice now in a month and I can't wait to go back, I think this spot has spoilt me for camping everywhere else.

Disliked Not one thing.

Liked Positives:
- The campsite is in a beautiful spot next to the river with access to amazing hikes nearby. Firepit and log chairs were a great addition as well as the crossing of the river. 4x4 is required to cross but we did see people being transported across by the owners.
- The owners were super friendly and welcoming on arrival
- Only 4 pitches which adds to the rural camping feel and well spread out. Hardly no noise from other people.
- Facilities were generally great for the location including a useful tuck shop (for fire wood, eggs and other useful bits), shower (hot) and toilets. We had no issues with availability of facilities, however the pitches were not full. The facilities are what you'd expect from this location.

Disliked - The only negative was no running hot water tap for washing up etc (The shower was hot and ran on gas). This may be a little harsh to expect hot water tap and sink in this location but the only negative I could think of.

Local attractions

Local village Blair Atholl is a pretty place to start wanderings off at, for a stroll around the extensive gardens of 13th-century Blair Castle… followed by fish and chips at the town’s acclaimed takeaway. Scottish tweed, other clothing and gifts are all sourceable at the House of Bruar. The Pitlochry fish ladder is a local destination to take your camera along to: this famed fishway has 34 pools in total, including one with an underwater viewing area and CCTV for easy viewing. In town, the Pitlochry Festival Theatre has performances and festivals throughout the year, or if you’re feeling energetic you can strike out on the long-distance Rob Roy Way which runs for 79 miles from Pitlochry to Drymen in Stirling. More walking paths and mountain biking routes are close by, along with walks by Loch Rammel, Loch Errochty and Loch Tummel all within 25 minutes’ drive. More placid options include the zoo and safari park of the Highland Wildlife Park (45 minutes’ drive), Aviemore (55 minutes), Cairngorm Reindeer Centre (also 55 minutes) and Scone Palace (an hour and five minutes). Further afield, get along to Dundee or St Andrews (an hour and 25 minutes and an hour and 45 minutes away respectively), for several castles and Firth of Tay views at the former and some of the most famed golf in the world at the latter.
