Pitch no.1 in some early morning shade (added by visitor 23 jul 2021)
View looking towards the cairngorms (added by manager 06 jul 2019)

  • Peaceful setting with riverside pitches and views of the Cairngorms
  • A 15-min drive from Blair Atholl, 20 from Pitlochry and 60 from Perth
  • Semi-wild camping with hot shower plus free-range eggs for sale
Peace in Perthshire, with views of the Cairngorms? Come along to Dall Cottage Camping. The sensible folk here have set up their small site to stay as close to nature as possible, keeping the vibe as semi-wild camping in a rural wildlife haven. The site is next to the River Garry over a river ford crossing and is only accessible to walkers, cyclists and 4x4 vehicles, which means a definite remote feel as well as plenty of space… (parking and a lift in a 4x4 are available for those travelling in normal cars). And for your adventures off site? This is a stunning setting for outdoor days: on the southern edge of the Cairngorms National Park (Britain’s biggest, fact fans), a short drive from three lochs and just north of Tay Forest Park. There’s easy access to towns and cities too: Pitlochry is 20 minutes’ drive away, the Fair Trade shopping of Aberfeldy within 40, and Perth just over an hour. Blair Atholl, home to the Atholl Country Life Museum and Blair Castle, is 15 minutes from the site. Wild camping of any flavour most certainly needs fire, and the Dall Cottage team turn up trumps here too, providing firepits for guests’ use so that eats, drinks and stargazing can be done alongside toasty flames. Amenities are well thought out too: there’s a hot shower, clean and well-equipped compost toilet. Please note that only four wheel drive vehicles can be parked next to the pitch; other cars will need to be parked on the other side of the river (transport can be provided across the river on arrival and departure, but please provide the team with a time in advance).

  • The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act (i.e. Pit Bull Terrier, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino, and Fila Brasileiro).
  • No cars/motorbikes by the pitch/unit. All cars must be parked in the designated area.
  • This is a quiet site: no music is allowed.
  • Please note that the toilet/shower facilities are unisex.
  • Access to the site is through a river across a rough un-surfaced ford, so is only suitable for 4x4 vehicles with good ground clearance. Campers on foot, bike, or trail-type motorbikes can also cross, but with caution and by experienced riders. Most of the time the river is low, allowing for crossing, however, on occasion the river can rise quickly after heavy rainand be un-passable, please be aware of this. If you're travelling in a normal car, you'll need to park on the other side of the river and use the site's 4x4 to transport your gear (please arrange this in advance).

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Our adventure began with a friendly host picking us up to transport us across the river ford. Our pitch was perfect for our set up: 3, 2 and 1 person tents with small tarp shelter. Located above the riverbank with great views and safe access to the river. The section of river allowed safe paddling and exploring. Each pitch has a well set up firepit area. The composite toliets were very clean and easily accessible there is even an imaculate hot shower. Great little (unmanned) shop on site for firewood etc and the nice touch was the marshmallow kits also for sale. Felt like wildcamping with the bonus of the facilities and safe environment for families of all ages. Our teenagers really enjoyed the two night stay. Will be definitely returning. There is also a bothy available.

Disliked: Worth noting that if you do not bring a 4x4 on site, you should consider to bring all the supplies you require with you. We did make it across the river in sliders and bare feet though.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Quiet, off grid, beautiful setting beside river. Little honesty shop with firewood, water, sweets, crisps. Toilets immaculate. Access over river no problem and fun with 4x4. Friendly welcome. If you want peace and quiet it's ideal. Lovely to be surrounded by nature.

Disliked: Road noise from A9, but it wouldn't stop us visiting again.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Amazing location, very peaceful and relaxing next to a river. The site has a compost loo and a shower with a small shop. The fire pits are great, you can buy fire wood and lighter from the shop. You have to cross a river to get to the site, the river is very shallow, I managed it easily with my bike and bags.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Great campsite, very spacious. Tents were a good distance from eachother and every pitch had its own fire pit. The shop was a nice touch which I wasn’t expecting and owners were fantastic.

Disliked: Male toilet inside lock didn’t quite line up so found it difficult to lock and still unsure how the shower was meant to lock. We were the only ones on site so didn’t ask for assistance though.

Local attractions

Local village Blair Atholl is a pretty place to start wanderings off at, for a stroll around the extensive gardens of 13th-century Blair Castle… followed by fish and chips at the town’s acclaimed takeaway. Scottish tweed, other clothing and gifts are all sourceable at the House of Bruar. The Pitlochry fish ladder is a local destination to take your camera along to: this famed fishway has 34 pools in total, including one with an underwater viewing area and CCTV for easy viewing. In town, the Pitlochry Festival Theatre has performances and festivals throughout the year, or if you’re feeling energetic you can strike out on the long-distance Rob Roy Way which runs for 79 miles from Pitlochy to Drymen in Stirling. More walking paths and mountain biking routes are close by, along with walks by Loch Rammel, Loch Errochty and Loch Tummel all within 25 minutes’ drive. More placid options include the zoo and safari park of the Highland Wildlife Park (45 minutes’ drive), Aviemore (55 minutes), Cairngorm Reindeer Centre (also 55 minutes) and Scone Palace (an hour and five minutes). Further afield, get along to Dundee or St Andrews (an hour and 25 minutes and an hour and 45 minutes away respectively), for several castles and Firth of Tay views at the former and some of the most famed golf in the world at the latter.
