  • On the shoreline of Kirkwall Bay, with views of Orkney's north isles
  • A five-minute drive to central Kirkwall and convenient for ferries
  • Heated bathroom block with family/accessible shower room
A spot right on the shoreline of Kirkwall Bay is something to be treasured, for sure – and that’s exactly what you’ll get at Kirkwall Bay Holiday Park, two miles from the centre of Kirkwall. Gorgeous Orkney Islands scenery and sea views come as standard with the pitches here, as do handy facilities including electric hookups, a washing-up area and heated bathrooms with male and female showers and toilets, plus an accessible/family shower room. Pitches also have access to a chemical disposal point and a motorhome service point with a grey waste disposal and fresh water fill-up. That proximity to Kirkwall (you can walk it in half an hour or drive in five minutes) means that lots of things are within easy reach here, including restaurants, takeaways and shops or supermarkets for supplies. And with Kirkwall being a harbour town, that also means easy access to ferries to the outlying islands or other destinations including Aberdeen and Lerwick. Come along ready for all sorts of outdoor activities in this area: Orkney is something of a paradise for birdwatchers, and there are some gorgeous wildflowers making the scenery even more spectacular in summer. There are some fab big beaches for walks (or dog walks) and some great quiet roads for cycling around to the nature reserves and attractions like the Italian Chapel.

Local attractions

Start your break with a wander around Kirkwall, visiting Saint Magnus Cathedral, the Earl’s Palace and the Orkney Museum. Just outside the town is the Highland Park Whisky Distillery, where you can take a tour, learn a bit about the smoky spirit and sample a dram or two. After that, it’s time to get out of town and see some more of Orkney’s stunning coastal scenery, taking trips to the likes of Mull Head nature reserve (25 minutes’ drive), Skara Brae (half an hour) and the Churchill Barriers (15 minutes). Birdwatchers will also want to add the RSPB reserve at Marwick Head (half an hour) to the list for sightings of puffins and other seabirds hanging out on the cliffs. Other nearby attractions include the gorgeous Italian Chapel (15 minutes), built by prisoners of war during World War II, the ancient standing stones at Ring of Brodgar (20 minutes) and the huge Stone Age tomb Maes Howe (20 minutes). Scapa Flow, where German ships were scuttled in World War II, is about 20 minutes away by car – visit the museum to learn about the history, take a tour with a local historian or get your underwater gear on to explore on a scuba diving trip.
