  • Well-maintained site in the grounds of a golf club on the Moray Firth
  • Fochabers 10 minutes’ drive; Glenfiddich Distillery half an hour
  • Access to the golf course; dogs welcome; firepit and picnic tables
What’s not to like about Spey Bay Golf Club? It’s an impeccably maintained site in the grounds of a golf club. More than that: it sits right on the coast of the Moray Firth in northern Scotland. Want to crank this all the way up to 11? This coastline is famed for sightings of bottlenose dolphins. (By the way, if you want to learn more about these watery visitors, head to the WDC Scottish Dolphin Centre, a 10 minutes’ walk away.) In other words, there’s something here for everybody, not just the golf-obsessed in your midst – though they will certainly get a lot out of being on site, with a gorgeous 18-hole course where they can practise their swing and work towards reducing their handicap. Mind you, they might get distracted by the spectacular views of the firth and return home no better at golf than when they left… Meanwhile, non-golfing people might take the dog on a long, energising walk on Spey Bay beach (10 minutes’ walk), scramble up to Binn Hill viewpoint (20 minutes’ drive) for far-reaching coastal views, or take it a bit easier and sample the home-made gin at the bar. The firepit area comes with picnic tables and views of the sea. If you don’t fancy firing up the barbecue – which implies having to source provisions, though that’s easily done at Fochabers (10 minutes) – there’s a restaurant on site.

What customers say

This small, quiet site is praised for its beautiful coastal location next to a golf course, offering sea views and easy beach access. Visitors frequently highlight the exceptionally friendly and helpful staff, the cleanliness of the toilet and shower facilities, and the good value food available at the clubhouse. While most found the pitches spacious and level, some noted that the site can feel exposed and a few felt the facilities were dated or cramped, with occasional issues like shower drainage or limited clubhouse hours. Despite these minor points, many reviewers expressed a desire to return.

Liked It was perfect, very clean toilets and showers.
But maybe there should be a mop in the shower so you can clean after use. Thanks

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked Great wee set up. Staff were so friendly and helpful. The toilets and shower are open 24/7, washing machine and tumble dryer and there was washing powder to use, all included in the price of a pitch. Food was available and was very good.

Liked Welcome check in by a man on site.

Disliked More like a car park. No club open for food or drink only open from Friday nights. Golfers could use camping facilities and no connectors on taps outside. Only 1 shower in each male and female which was not vety clean. No WiFi perhaps as club was not open?

Liked The only like was the man that booked us in was friendly

Disliked The website shows touring bays these are not there as they have now installed pods into what was the touring bays. We basically stayed in a car park that had electric hook up, which is shared with the golfers, it is literally a golf club car park, not a campsite. The car park is made of gravel so you constantly hear any vehicle or person going by, this goes on all day and night.
The bins for the restaurant at the club are in the car park and the staff run around in golf buggies with the empty bottles so some more noise to help with the rest.
Not what’s shown, no where near the £30 a night charge, it’s basic and noisy, no views and the facilities are old, 1 shower, toilet seats broken needs cleaned and updated. We booked 2 nights but left early morning after 1 night. Could not recommend this site, will not be back.

Electric hardstanding touring pitch

Liked Large gravel/grass parking area with 8 touring pitches (4 hard standing/4 grass) next to the golf club parking, (plus some seasonal pitches). Really quiet, nice bar with some limited food options. Clean toilet facilities. Good dog walking along the beach or in the woodland at the back of the golf course.

Disliked Of the 4 posts (8 electric hook ups), one post wasn't working (2 hook ups) and another post (2 hook ups) was the other side of a gravel track (could ruin your lead if traffic ran over it) so the first 4 vans had good hook ups!

Local attractions

Elgin (20 minutes’ drive) is home to the remains of a 13th-century cathedral on the banks of the River Lossie. Next door to the well-preserved ruins is the Biblical Garden, featuring more than 100 plants that are mentioned in the Bible. Meanwhile, the Moray Motor Museum displays a collection of vintage vehicles. The immersive 4D experience at the Speyside Cooperage Visitor Centre (25 minutes) takes you through the various stages of the art of making casks. You can then move on to the viewing gallery to see craftsmen as they create barrels for the whisky industry. Established in 1886, Glenfiddich Distillery (half an hour), on the outskirts of Dufftown, is one of the oldest family-owned distilleries in Scotland. Tours of the facility range from a basic 90-minute introduction to a full four-hour experience, which includes a visit to the cooperage and a guided tasting of single malts.
