  • Cycle hire on site; a short walk from shops, cafés and a train station
If your kind of self-care is booking a getaway to somewhere peaceful, and you consider being on the Moray Malt Whisky Trail bonus points, you should quite like the sound of Elgin Escape Whisky Farm. Quiet and rural, yet set within walking distance of shops, cafés, pubs and a train station, this dog-friendly site is in Forres at the very start of the Malt Whisky Trail. In fact, it's right next door to the first distillery on the route. To top all of that, the site is also only half an hour’s drive away from Lossiemouth, where there are all manner of activities to get stuck into, whether it's surfing, rockpooling and paddleboarding or a relaxed coffee and ice cream at the marina. Elgin Escape Whisky Farm describes itself as ‘an adventure in self-care’, which is quite fitting considering that it has large, green open spaces with views of trees. The site can also arrange cycle hire for you so that you can be out on two wheels in no time. They also run activities designed to promote relaxation and rejuvenation, which should be handy if you have any free time to fill on your itinerary. On site, there are composting loo and shower facilities. Barbecues are welcome, as are dogs.

Local attractions

The Moray Malt Whisky Trail begins in Forres. There are seven distilleries on the route, beginning with Benromach Distillery (next door to the site) and ending with Glen Moray Distillery (20 minutes’ drive). Aside from whisky, Forres is known for being a short drive from Brodie Castle and Estate (10 minutes), a National Trust castle with gorgeous gardens, daffodils (in season) and an art collection. From Forres train station (10 minutes’ walk), there’s a direct 30-minute train to Inverness (otherwise 45 minutes’ drive). Browse around the old town, which has a 19th-century cathedral and a Victorian market, or take a dolphin-spotting trip out onto the Moray Firth. There are stunning coastal walks from Lossiemouth East Beach (half an hour). Nairn (15 minutes) also has more pretty seaside scenes, with three beaches. Golfers might want to visit Nairn’s two championship golf courses for some putting with a view. Whether or not you’ve already seen the cathedral in Inverness, a visit to Elgin Cathedral (20 minutes) should still be worthwhile. The 13th-century cathedral is over 600 years older than the one in Inverness.
