  • Peaceful dog-friendly holiday park at a Moray coast fishing village
  • Walk to sandy beaches and forest trails in Roseisle Country Park
  • Adjacent to a beach; guests can use a pool 10 minutes’ drive away
Scouting for that one peaceful spot where all the family can take a break on Moray coast near Lossiemouth? Signed, stamped and sorted at Burghead Holiday Park, a peaceful holiday park in the Moray coast fishing village of Burghead. In these parts, you'll be able to go orca and dolphin spotting or birdwatching in the bay, and the Northern Lights are another frequent visitor during autumn… Dolphins, whales and aurora borealis aside, this holiday park has a few more special ingredients. There are no facilities on the park – just well-maintained grounds and lots of space to soak up that great outdoors – but it’s in a splendid location on the edge of Roseisle Country Park, a place where you can either follow forest trails or wander straight out onto the sandy beach (or combine a bit of both). When you fancy it, swap the peaceful setting for some slightly more lively scenes at Burghead Harbour, 10 minutes’ walk away. The village has shops, a pharmacy and an outdoor bowling club, as well Doorie Hill – the location for the Burning of the Clavie and the Pictish Fort. Following the coastal trail east on two wheels or two feet, Hopeman has lots more amenities and an 18-hole golf course (of course, teeing off is a must-do in Moray). While this is a thoroughly peaceful spot, a little extra entertainment (of the non-sandy kind) is on hand at the site’s sister park, Silver Sands Holiday Park, 10 minutes’ drive away – head here for free use of the swimming pool and to dine at the restaurant.

Electric grass pitch

Liked: The location is good - easy access to a nice beach and the lovely forest of Roseisle. Because it is on the beach the ground is flat and soft too so good for pitching!

Disliked: Thankfully someone was in the office when we arrived, otherwise it would have been very hard to find our pitch and we would have had to ask the caravan that was half over it to move. That was sorted, but the pitch area was minimal size - no space for guy ropes! Facilities are minimal - this site is obviously geared towards static caravans and tents are an after-thought. The toilets were clean over the weekend but got progressively dirtier through the week and the nearby water tap was broken so we always had to walk across the site for water. On our first night we were disturbed at 11pm by a warden in a van who asked to see our booking email to prove we should be there!

Electric hardstanding touring pitch

Liked: Being so close to the sea and a forest behind the park.

Disliked: Pitches very small, toilet block very shabby and outdated, no grey waste disposal, rarely any staff on site, no wifi, dogs running about off leads, kids kicking ball near vans, could be a real gem with some TLC.

Local attractions

It’s not just the Moray Firth coast that has stunning scenery, so point your compass inland too. Characterful Elgin (15 minutes’ drive) has a number of distilleries, including Glen Moray Distillery (15 minutes), Gordon & MacPhail South Street (20 minutes) and Glen Elgin Distillery (25 minutes), most of which have open days for the public and whisky trails – and of course, there are the typical Scottish pubs, shops and restaurants to duck into too. If you’re here to get up close and personal with the waves, there’s a surf school at the east beach in Lossiemouth (20 minutes). With another beach on the other side of the harbour and sand dunes, get acquainted with the lush sand too. Golfers who like to tee off with terrific scenery can also get sea views from the holes on the Moray Golf Club, a links course alongside the west beach. RAF planes also swoop low over the course, adding an extra touch to the atmosphere.
