General
- Spectacularly scenic lakeside site on the West Highland Way trail
- A 30-minute drive from Glasgow, 40 from Stirling and 50 from Edinburgh
- Fishing on site; barbecues and campfires allowed
If you’re fond of Scottish wilderness, wildlife and hillside hiking paths, then it’s highly recommended that you hunker down at this Blanefield site, for it’s right on the West Highland Way walking route and within easy reach of the Glasgow, Edinburgh and Stirling – plus the waters of Loch Lomond too.
Cue pics, because the views are utterly sensational from here: The West Highland Way Campsite looks out over a lake as well as heather-covered hills in the near distance. This is a remote area with lots of outdoor adventuring to try, such as horse riding via the centre two miles away in Strathblane, or fishing for salmon and trout at Allander Water five miles away. Or head to Loch Lomond for more fishing, several hiking trails around the lake, and kayak and boat hire; it's an easy 20 minutes' drive away.
Back at base, set up for days’ worth of angling at the neighbouring lake, and fire up the barbecue when suitably famished. At night, keep your cockles warm with a campfire, and as the cinders smoulder away, sit back and enjoy the dark skies above: this site’s remote locale makes for some pretty sterling stargazing. Once it's light again, fuel up for the day ahead by joining fellow guests for breakfast (it's all thrown in with the price of your stay).

Local attractions
Several active options are within easy reach: as well the West Highland Way and nearby horse riding, the site is 20 minutes’ drive from a golf course eight miles north of Glasgow near the village of Torrance.
For something water-based, Allander water is five miles away for salmon and trout fishing while the south-eastern shores of lovely Loch Lomond are a 20-minute drive away. As well as fishing, visitors can rent themselves a vessel to investigate the island, where a picnic area awaits: do bag lots of local produce to take along...
If you’re planning on sticking to land-based activities in Loch Lomond and The Trossachs National Park, plenty of hiking trails lie around the loch and the wider lands for sunset strolls, or you could hike up a munro, tramp around wild glens, or cycle over the Duke’s Pass.
Climbing, bouldering and mountaineering are all popular around the national park too: head to (among many other spots) the mountains around the coastal village of Arrochar for cross-grade summer and winter climbing.
Must see
- Glasgow Botanic Gardens (7.9 miles)
- Clydebuilt (Scottish Maritime Museum Braehead) (7.9 miles)
- Hunterian Art Gallery (8.3 miles)
