  • Small, peaceful site by the Campsie Fells, a mile from Strathblane
  • On the John Muir Way and West Highland Way walking trails
  • In the grounds of a hotel with restaurant, hot tub and games room
What a spot this is for walkers and cyclists – Lanarkshire's John Muir Way Campsite, a mile from Strathblane, is on both the John Muir Way and West Highland Way trails for long-distance types... and on the edge of the gorgeous Campsie Fells for those who like to keep outings a little more local. If that’s not quite enough to sate your appetite for activity, look a little further to the trails of the Trossachs National Park, the clutch of golf courses or the watersports of Loch Lomond, all within a half-hour drive. Those who fancy dipping a toe into urban adventures can get to Glasgow in around half an hour or to Stirling in 40 minutes; closer to home, castles, bird parks and whisky-sipping tours (but of course) are on hand too if that all sounds a tad too tiring. Back at base, there’s plenty of space to sit back and admire the gorgeous rural views, sipping a whisky by the barbecue or campfire should you desire (source edibles to accompany it at the supermarket in Strathblane). If you fancy a little bit of luxury once you’ve scrubbed up at the shower block, meander up to the main building to avail yourself of boutique hotel facilities including a hot tub, a games room and a swish restaurant.

Local attractions

Hardcore hikers and cyclists may well find this a handy stopover for journeys on the 134-mile coast to coast John Muir Way or the 96-mile West Highland Way. Those with a taste for day walks or mountain scrambles may instead like to aim for the various trails of the Trossachs National Park (15 minutes’ drive) or just wander out onto the Campsie Fells, by the site. Fishing is on site for those who’ve brought kit along, and there are at least 10 golf courses within a 20-minute drive (that’ll keep club-wielders busy for a while…). Those who like a bit of lake-based activity can drive to Loch Lomond in 25 minutes or so for kayak hire, seaplane flights and boat cruises (or a wander around the aquarium in Balloch if the weather’s not up to much). If you’ve brought the tiddlers along (or even if you haven’t), a flying demo at Strathblane Falconry (five minutes’ drive) is a splendid idea. Strictly not for the small sorts but something of a must for the grownups is a tour of Glengoyne Distillery (five minutes’ drive or just under an hour’s walk if you’d like to take full advantage of the whisky tastings).
