  • Eco-friendly off-grid cabins in the woods close to Munlochy
  • A 15-minute drive to Inverness or the Chanonry Point dolphins
  • Woodburning stove, solar lighting and outdoor kitchen provided
Head off into the wilds of the Black Isle and immerse yourselves in the natural surroundings with a stay at Wildwoodz Cabins, where birch cabins sit among the forests a little way outside the village of Munlochy. The eco-friendly cosy cabins here are designed to make you feel like part of the landscape while providing a few comforts to make life a little easier. Each one sleeps four (in a comfy double bed plus two singles) and has large French doors opening out onto a covered deck with gorgeous views of the woods. To avoid unnecessary impact on the environment, the cabins are completely off grid. You probably won’t miss the electricity though – lighting is provided with a mix of solar, dynamo and battery power and you’ll be kept nice and warm thanks to the woodburning stove. Outside, an outdoor kitchen area has a gas camping stove and a table and chairs for your alfresco meals. As there’s no running water, bottled water is provided for drinking and washing. For supplies, it’s a short two-minute drive to the village, which has a small supermarket (along with a pub/restaurant for evenings out). For more choice of shops and places to eat out, it’s a 10-minute drive to Fortrose or 15 minutes to the centre of Inverness.

Local attractions

If you’re coming to this part of the world in search of nature you may well want to spend a bit of time just hanging out in the woods on site. Beyond that though, you can keep an eye out for big birds at RSPB Tollie Red Kites (15 minutes’ drive) or train your eyes on the waves at Chanonry Point (15 minutes) to see if you can spot the local dolphins. Several companies in Cromarty (25 minutes) will take you out on sea safaris for a closer look if you like. Sticking with the outdoors, there’s a golf club in Fortrose (10 minutes), and a lovely beach and ‘fairy glen’ walk in Rosemarkie (10 minutes). For a more full-on adventure, head into the Cairngorms National Park (45 minutes) for mountain biking, hiking and a meeting with the Cairngorm Reindeer Herd (an hour). For a true Scottish experience, head a little south of Inverness to Loch Ness (half an hour) to see if you can spot the famous monster, or take a tour of distilleries like Glen Wyvis (15 minutes) and Glenmorangie (35 minutes).

Birch cabin (four person)

Liked: We had one night at Wildwoodz and absolutely loved it. The route to the cabins is clearly marked out and was exciting for the children to follow. The cabin had everything we needed and was in an absolutely beautiful setting. Everything was clean and much care had been taken in providing what we would need. It was cosy and lovely. We sat out listening to tawny owls and saw red squirrels really close to the cabin the next morning. I wish we had stayed for longer but will definitely be going back.

Birch cabin (four person)

Birch cabin (four person)

Liked: Off-grid aspects, daily refills for washing water, comfortable bed, lots of space

Disliked: (very minor, but could have done with a refill.of the tiny bottle of milk for coffee as bought a whole bottle of milk and it went off as nowhere cold to store it.)

Birch cabin (four person)

Liked: Very clean, great off grid experience also details such as card games and Board games were a plus the building itself was brilliant high quality finish. Quiet area in the woods to explore outdoor fire pit and indoor wood burner gas hob, 10min drive to centre of Inverness very well located and easy to find. Always had signal, perfect for kids and great introductory to the outdoors

Disliked: Only thing I would say would be that I would prefer blinds or curtains for the windows but that’s neither here nor there
