General
- Nearly-wild camping with stunning views across Loch Scresort
- A 10-minute walk to the ferry port; five minutes to Kinloch Castle
- Views across the bay; beaches, shop and café within walking distance
When it comes to the wild, the Isle of Rum is pretty high up there. Hugging the shore of Loch Scresort, the only village on the island of Rum, this dog-friendly site rests on a pretty isle made up of a national nature reserve, making it a great choice to take a break in nature.
This is a car-free island, but there's no shortage of sublime beaches and hiking trails nearby, so you’ll have plenty of chances to spot the local wildlife or just lay back on site and look out over to Skye in the distance. Plus, 10 minutes’ walk from the ferry port and an hour and 25 minutes’ ferry from Mallaig, you can head over there to board the steam railway in the so-called ‘road to the isles’.
As there’s so much to occupy your time, facilities at this wild-style site are very basic, with just a cold-water washing-up point. All the more time to sit back and take in the backdrop of splendid bay views all around.
You’ll certainly need a trusty store of snacks with so many nature trails nearby. Handily, there’s a small shop within 10 minutes’ walk. You can find a café here too if you're looking for a great spot to tuck into some food and admire the views.
Please note that the toilets and shower facilities are approximately 250 metres from the campsite.

From the manager...
Hello there! Sorry for the inconvenience of the showers losing hot water. As a campsite on a remote island, we are unable to get contractors out to deal with our island issues as quickly as we would like but we are working on getting this sorted as soon as we can. In terms of booking the wrong date, I was unaware this happened but am very happy to refund you the money you lost due to this so please contact us via Rum Bunkhouse and I will get on this straight away We are a community run campsite so unfortunately we are unable to have staff on site at all times/throughout the day. I usually try and say hello to any new campers so I do apologise if I missed you. Our contact details are up in the camping hut if you ever need to talk with us. Again, I am sorry our campsite was not what you expected and the inconvenience this has caused you. |

Local attractions
To see where wildlife and otters hide out, there’s a hide just 15 minutes’ walk away, or more nature living it up around the North Side Trail (five minutes to the start point).
Some sturdy shoes or hiking boots are a must here, of course, as without the cars, you’ll be hunting down the island’s hot spots on foot. Some such places include the Kinloch Glen waterfall (45 minutes), the sandy beach and dunes at Kilmory Bay (an hour and a half) and the more rugged stretch of coast at Harris (two hours and 10 minutes’ walk) with rather lovely views over Coll and Tirree.
It may be a way to go, but Dibidil Bothby (two hours and 10 minutes) is well worth the trip. It’s a little mountain cabin way up in the hills, with nothing but the landscapes (and perhaps some hairy Highland cattle) as an accompaniment.
Must see
- The Aros Experience (27.4 miles)

Thanks so much for your feedback!
In terms of a sign on the water tap, we will ensure it is added to our job list as it's a great idea.
Unfortunately due to the water system/pipework on island means we are very rigid in terms of where are facilities are. I hope you understand our current constraints on this front.
I'm sorry to hear your cooking facilities failed. We do offer Trangias to guests at 10 a night and would have happily gave you one for free had I known! Apologies for this!
The Bunkhouse is currently booked exclusively and has been for 2 weeks so we were unable to allow emergency meals in the Bunkhouse. I do apologise for the inconvenience all these this may have caused you during your stay and do hope we see you on island again soon.
