  • Nearly-wild camping with stunning views across Loch Scresort
  • A 10-minute walk to the ferry port and a shop
  • Views across the bay; beaches within walking distance
When it comes to the wild, the Isle of Rum is pretty high up there. Hugging the shore of Loch Scresort, the only village on the island of Rum, this dog-friendly site rests on a pretty isle made up of a national nature reserve, making it a great choice to take a break in nature. This is a car-free island, but there's no shortage of sublime beaches and hiking trails nearby, so you’ll have plenty of chances to spot the local wildlife or just lay back on site and look out over to Skye in the distance. Plus, 10 minutes’ walk from the ferry port and an hour and 25 minutes’ ferry from Mallaig, you can head over there to board the steam railway in the so-called ‘road to the isles’. Facilities at the site include two communal barbecues (charcoal not included) and an indoor shelter for birdwatching or sheltering from the weather. There are also two showers, two sinks by the sea and access to a hot-water tap. You’ll certainly need a trusty store of snacks with so many nature trails nearby. Handily, there’s a small shop within 10 minutes’ walk which also sells hot soup and chips every day.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Lovely setting for a campsite and all the staff are friendly and helpful. A little walk to the toilets/showers but nothing worse than you'd have at some of the bigger campsites and a 10 minute walk from the local store. If a peaceful camping trip is what you want then this is the place.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Lovely location and some great amenities - the chairs and cooking tables, and the bbq kit were really appreciated

Disliked: We were there during a quiet time so were allowed to use the very nice showers and bathrooms in the bunkhouse - had we not been, it would have been quite irritating to have to walk back and forth to the public facilities up the road. We were also reasonably lucky with the weather, but if it had been wetter the instruction not to cook inside the campsite shelter would have been an issue - where would we have been able to shelter to cook?

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: The views from the camp spot were lovely and the was a hide which was available for shelter. There are also stone BBQs and the racks etc were available for use in the hide.

Disliked: Toilets and showers were quite a distance away from the camp. You can't use the bunkhouse facilities. There are quite a few boggy patches in the camp site. Quite expensive for a tent pitch.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: The shelter hut was great for sorting gear after being out in the hills. And then as a place to retreat to when the rain and hail showers came down. Beautiful view from it too.

Disliked: A bit of a hike to the toilets and showers.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: The facilities were excellent, particularly the cabin, where I could escape the rain or midges. The location is stunning and all the facilities were very clean and well cared for. The cooking tables, folding chairs and barbecues were a real bonus for campers because we cannot carry these. There were good guides for various walks and the binoculars in the cabin were a nice touch. It is clear the site manager has put a lot of thought into creating a perfect camp site.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Absolutely beautiful place to camp, amazing views, great wee hide to watch the wildlife. Although the ducks and geese happy to come and say hello.

Disliked: Need toilets closer to campsite. Being a mature lady. Far too far away. Maybe put one or two next to the hide. My only dislike.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Small campsite where you could choose where to pitch. The camping cabin was excellent and we were delighted there were chairs and camping tables available to borrow. The loos and showers were about 400 metres away. The showers were compact and were lovely and warm. The warden was very helpful and pleasant.

Local attractions

To see where wildlife and otters hide out, there’s a hide just 15 minutes’ walk away, or more nature living it up around the North Side Trail (five minutes to the start point). Some sturdy shoes or hiking boots are a must here, of course, as without the cars, you’ll be hunting down the island’s hot spots on foot. Some such places include the Kinloch Glen waterfall (45 minutes), the sandy beach and dunes at Kilmory Bay (an hour and a half) and the more rugged stretch of coast at Harris (two hours and 10 minutes’ walk) with rather lovely views over Coll and Tirree. It may be a way to go, but Dibidil Bothby (two hours and 10 minutes) is well worth the trip. It’s a little mountain cabin way up in the hills, with nothing but the landscapes (and perhaps some hairy Highland cattle) as an accompaniment.
