  • Secluded woodland camping pods near Forsinard and the North Coast 500
  • A 50-minute drive to River Helmsdale fishing; an hour to John O’Groats
  • Dog-friendly off-grid site with dark skies and a communal firepit
Planning your big escape to the wilds of the Highlands and Islands? Or perhaps plotting an adventure on the North Coast 500? Those who like their Scottish breaks to include a dose of comfort should find that this remote spot fits the bill. Forsinard Cabin Camping allows you to stay out in the open but it isn’t your typical touch-down-in-a-tent sort of stay. Instead, the hideouts are camping pods – escape pods, the site owners call them – in a gorgeous Sutherland woodland setting. The wooden pods are each decked out with twin beds (bring all your own linen and towels), plus individual garden areas with bench seating. A communal firepit takes care of barbecues under the stars on clear nights (pick up bits for the grill from the store in Melvich, 15 minutes’ drive away). Simple site facilities stretch to showers and toilets; as this is an off-grid, back-to-nature experience, remember to bring torches to find your way around the site after dark. Any doggy pals are welcome to join you on explorations of the site's woodland, as well as the nearby Forsinard Flows Nature Reserve.

Local attractions

A vast expanse of preserved blanket bog, Forsinard Flows Nature Reserve (10 minutes’ drive) is criss-crossed with numerous nature trails and guided walks – on your journey, keep any eye out for the dippers, plovers and hen harriers that make the area so popular with birdwatchers. Keen anglers can combine a bracing walk with fishing for brown trout in Loch Saird (an hour's walk, permits must be bought), or fish for salmon on the namesake river at Helmsdale (50 minutes). If you’d rather forego the walking altogether, why not head for Bettyhill Viewpoint (half an hour’s drive) for far-reaching views over moorland to the peaks of Sutherland including Ben Hope and Ben Loyal? At John O’Groats (an hour), taste local craft beers at John O’Groats Brewery and Visitor Experience, and try to spot dolphins and minke whales off the coastline. On an adventure across the seas? Stay overnight at Forsinard before taking the ferry from Scrabster (35 minutes) to Stromness on Orkney to dive over World War I wrecks in Scapa Flow, explore the World War II camp at Ness Battery or discover the best-preserved Neolithic settlement in the UK at Skara Brae Prehistoric Village.
