  • Adults-only glamping pod next to ancient woodland in the Highlands
  • Drumnadrochit 20 minutes’ walk and Loch Ness Viewpoint 40 minutes
  • Well-equipped kitchen, double bed, Smart TV and welcome pack
Sometimes you just need adults-only time and a touch of luxury on your Highland adventures. If that’s the case, Red Squirrel Pod at Loch Ness Woodland Pods may well be the place for you. Set in an ancient oak woodland, it has everything you need to relax and unwind amid nature, and is only 20 minutes’ walk from shops and restaurants in the popular village of Drumnadrochit if you fancy eating out or shopping for souvenirs. This cosy wooden pod has much you need to feel right at home, with a Smart TV, kitchen corner with all the essentials, a double bed and ensuite bathroom with an electric shower. Towels and bedding are all provided, along with complementary bathroom treats, sweets, snacks and all you need to make a cuppa. The pod is very well insulated, so you can stay happily warm on winter Highland days when the snow is falling. Outside there’s parking for one car as well as secure storage for bikes and motorbikes (please let the owners know if you require this service before your arrival). So… now all you need to do is get relaxed. Sit out on your private deck and watch out for red squirrels in the woods behind the pod, where deer wander and buzzards and red kites soar above the trees. You might even be honoured with a visit from the resident grey cat (treats are provided to entice him in).

Local attractions

There are miles of walks for all abilities starting right outside the glampsite gate. Go in search of Nessie at Loch Ness Viewpoint (40 minutes’ walk), or have a potter through woodland up to the spectacular Falls of Divach (25 minutes). If you’re after more strenuous exercise, climb Ben Meall Fuar-mhonaidh (25 minutes’ drive to the car park) for spectacular views over the loch (and another chance to search for the elusive monster). If you don’t succeed in spying Nessie, head for Chanonry Point (55 minutes), where hopefully you’ll see other creatures of the deep – the local pod of dolphins coming close to shore to feed. And while you’re up on the north-east coast, be sure to spend some time on the long, sandy beach at Nairn (also 55 minutes), a scenic spot for winter walks or summer dips in the sea. Learn more about Highlands history with a self-guided tour of loch-side Urquhart Castle (10 minutes), or pick up tartan shawls and ties in the souvenir shops of Fort Augustus (half an hour), where you can also watch boats and barges going up and down the lock flight at the northern end of the Caledonian Canal.
