  • Spectacular scenery next to the River Blackwater
  • Hillwalking in the Munro mountains just minutes away
  • Reiki, reflexology and workshops available
River and reflexology, whisky and waterfalls, red kites and fishing and a remote location with easy access to roads for urban day trips… some places really do have pretty much everything. Or almost – you won’t find a clubhouse, pizza joint or noisy entertainment at family-run Riverside Caravan Park, but if you’re camping in the Scottish Highlands you’re probably going to be erring on the quieter side of peaceful. And you’re probably up for some stunning Scottish scenery too – have a look at the site pics for a quick peek. Riverside is next to the River Blackwater, flowing into the River Contin, a popular pull for salmon and trout anglers from Scotland and further afield. (Fishing is available too on the Blackwater from the site – just be sure to catch and release.) Munro mountains rise minutes from the park for hillwalking and 'Munro bagging' (climbing all the Munro peaks in one fell swoop/tired-legged trip), and mountain bike trails start just over the road from Riverside if you prefer to go at a more breakneck speed. To sort supplies, the well-stocked and reasonably priced village shop is right at the site entrance and fresh bread and pastries are sold on site most mornings during busy seasons. A garage/petrol station and hotel with bar and restaurant are about a mile away. And you’ll probably need a rest now. Which is why it's true that some places really do have pretty much everything: there’s an on-site holistic therapist at Riverside, offering reiki, reflexology, Karuna and metamorphic technique, and occasional workshops in drumming, meditation and more. It's a hard life…

Liked The gentleman owner was very helpful and allowed us to use the dryer complimentary as we’d left our towels out. The facilities were cleaned multiple times a day. Close to a shop and chippy. Midge repellent spray was available at the shop and garage for when needed and it was lovely to be so close to the river. Benches and swing seating inc meditation areas and solar lights along the river/wild area. If you’re wanting a central base to visit loads of places it’s great and a definite if you want a really quiet get away. Be aware no pubs locally though.

Liked Lovely open campsite, handy picnic benches and LOVED all the different access points to the river. Beautiful wildflower beds and young fruit trees. Feel is of a campsite open to and connected to "something more" than just a piece of ground used to profit from. Peaceful, tranquil and set up to support that.
Toilet and shower block lovely and clean too!

Liked Very happy with our stay. The owner was really lovely and helpful, the campsite was great and the toilet blocks and showers were some of the best I've seen in a campsite. Will 100% stay here again and for longer next time.
I have mobility issues and found that it was very accessible and easy to get around. Being able to park next to the pitch is invaluable for us.

From the manager: Many thanks for your review. It is really welcome as we do get some criticism for our facilities not being the most modern so that is good to hear and reflects the reality that they serve the function they are supposed to.

Liked The campsite was very nice and clean includingthe showers and toilets, would definitely go again..

Disliked Quite poor telephone answering service when they were open.

From the manager: Many thanks for your review , lovely to meet you both.

Rightly or wrongly , regarding telephone answering being poor we tend not to answer the phone and let it go to voicemail , the reason being 95% of calls are asking about availability of pitches , the voicemail message asks them to book online as the system checks the instant availability , we will ring people back if they already have a booking and leave a message, otherwise we are spending too much time answering the phone and saying the same thing as the voicemail, it is just my wife and I running the site.

Interestingly a site near us does not even offer a telephone number to ring and only take online bookings or take emails.

Local attractions

If you’ve any time left over after whisky trailing, fishing, climbing, mountain biking, wildlife watching or reflexology (really, it’s a hard life), there’s still a load to do around Riverside and the Scottish Highlands. Strathpeffer, Riverside’s nearest town, is well worth a look for its rather gorgeous golf course and the toys/exhibits of the Highland Museum of Childhood. Walk from the west end of Strathpeffer along the forest track to the hill of Cnoc Mor via the Pictish hill fort of Knock Farril, or drive a few miles from the town to visit Castle Leod originally a Pictish fort and now seat of the Mackenzie clan. A 24-hour mountain bike challenge starts each January from Strathpeffer too (yes, probably the one you saw on the news while you sat on the sofa polishing off the Christmas mince pies). And if you’re Loch Ness monster spotting on a day trip, pause for a few hours to Urquhart Castle on the loch’s shores, a medieval fortress and one of the biggest and most visited castles in Scotland.
