  • Cosy dog-friendly cabins in the Scottish Highlands with mountain views
  • A 20-minute drive from Fort William and 35 minutes from Ben Nevis
  • Patios with a firepit and barbecue; fully-equipped kitchenettes
From cruising over lochs to climbing summits… Stronaba Croft Cabins is well-situated for a reel of activities in the outdoors, 20 minutes' drive north of Fort William and 35 minutes from Ben Nevis (take the challenging six to eight-hour walk for some scenic views). With bespoke cabins hand-built by local craftsmen and 18 acres of rugged but splendid croft land, this is a rather cosy place to unwind in the Scottish Highlands (with well-behaved dogs permitted too). Keep your eyes peeled… deer, sheep and Highland cows graze the fields around the cabins and you may see buzzards soaring overhead. No need to give up your creature comforts to get back to nature though, as each cabin has a fully-equipped kitchenette, en-suite shower (with local toiletries) and added luxuries such as logburning stoves, underfloor heating and fluffy towels. Kick back on the patio and take in the mountain views over the firepit or barbecue. You may well want to prop your feet up, as the site is well-connected to many footpaths and bicycle routes, from leisurely forest trails to challenging high-altitude mountain ridge walks… or there’s quad biking and four wheel drive rides over at the Ardverikie Estate (40 minutes’ drive). Food on your mind? Handily, the site is five minutes’ drive from the Spean Bridge village and its food shop, post office, restaurants, pub and café. For a larger selection of restaurants and supermarkets (and the West Highland Museum and state-of-the-art cinema), Fort William is 20 minutes’ drive away.

Local attractions

Take on the big three of the West Highlands… Ben Nevis, Loch Ness (half an hour’s drive) and the Isle of Skye (an hour and a half) are all within reach. More mountains on your mind? From the Nevis Range Mountain Resort (10 minutes), take the gondola to Aonach Mòr (35 minutes) for walking trails and downhill mountain biking trails (or skiing in the winter). Follow the 'road to the Isles'… Glencoe (45 minutes), Oban (an hour and 25 minutes) and Mallaig (an hour and 10 minutes and a nice spot for a wildlife cruise to see dolphins, basking sharks, seals and sea eagles) are all splendid spots along the route. A cruise too? Glide over Loch Linnhe (20 minutes) or Loch Eil (20 minutes) with entertaining commentary from the boat’s skipper. Another journey, this time one known as the ‘Hogwarts' Express’, the Jacobite Steam Train (20 minutes) in Fort William crosses over the Glenfinnan Viaduct to Mallaig. That's not forgetting West Highlands' historic castles. There are many, including the ruins of Old Inverlochy Castle (15 minutes), the grand Eilean Donan Castle (an hour and 10 minutes) and the famed Urquhart Castle (55 minutes) on the shores of Loch Ness.
