  • Luxury lodge with Isle of Harris views in the Highlands and Islands
  • Five minutes’ walk to the beach; 90 minutes to the Old Man of Stoer
  • Whirlpool spa bath, full central heating and well-equipped kitchen
The mountains, lochs, the sea of the Highlands and Islands region… where better to enjoy a loved-up escape for two, with the chance to spot eagles, dolphins, whales and deer? Experience all this on a romantic break at West Horizon, a luxury lodge 25 minutes’ drive north of Lochinver, and with Isle of Harris views through floor-to-ceiling windows. Heated by gas central heating and well insulated, the lodge is designed to cope with all the weather that the West Highlands can throw at it, with handy areas for drying and storing outdoor clothing and boots. As well as a comfy sofa and reclining chair, the living area is kitted out with a large-screen TV, Blu-ray player and DVDs. Cooking in the kitchen is a doddle, thanks to a cooker, hob and everything you need to cook up a feast – buy provisions in Lochinver. When it’s time to turn in, a king-size bed with Tempur mattress awaits, with an ensuite bathroom. Towels, Egyptian cotton bedding, bathrobes and toiletries are all provided. After a day hiking bens and glens, your cosy retreat awaits so you can put your feet up by the fire and enjoy a complimentary dram of local whisky – with nothing more strenuous to do than idly keeping watch over the sea for passing cruise liners. Or having a long soak in the whirlpool spa bath. Or enjoying an alfresco dining experience under the dark sky and watching the stars perform their dance above you.

Local attractions

The Highlands and Islands serve up dramatic scenery by the bucketload, with miles of spectacular coastline, pristine sandy beaches, turquoise sea lochs and a scattering of pretty coastal villages. A good place to start your exploring is rock-strewn Balchladich Bay (10 minutes’ walk) or pack a picnic and eat it on sandy Achmelvich (25 minutes’ drive) or Clashnessie (five minutes) beaches. If it’s wildlife you’re after, you won’t be disappointed either. The North West Highlands are a haven for deer and birds of prey – spot them (possibly) on hikes to the Old Man of Stoer sea stack (90 minutes’ walk). You may be lucky enough to spot whales, dolphins and seals on boat trips from Lochinver (25 minutes’ drive), or hike the coastal path to Stoer Lighthouse (an hour’s walk) and hang out there with the ever-hopeful whale watchers. Alternatively, see Highlands history made in stone at the circular ruins of Ardvreck Castle (35 minutes) on the shores of Loch Assynt, and wind up your day at a 1950s folly, the concrete-built Hermit’s Castle (25 minutes), with barely enough room inside for a sleeping bag.
