  • On the North Coast 500 route 10 minutes' drive from Lochinver
  • Private bathroom and kitchen in each pod; shared barbecue area
There are lots of stunning spots along the route of the North Coast 500 – but even in the face of such competition, Achmelvich beach manages to stand out as a stunning spot. And here’s some good news… this stretch of white sand and clear blue sea will be only a couple of minutes’ walk away when you stay at NC500 Pods - Achmelvich. That fact alone makes this a rather fabulous place to pick for your break, whether you’re aiming to complete the entire road trip route or simply choosing a place to settle down for a few days. And yet it’s not just the location that sells this place, as the pods are just as fabulous as their surroundings… You should be nicely cosy and comfortable at all times in these lovely pods, as each one has insulation and underfloor heating, plus top-quality bed linen and towels, a private shower room and a kitchen corner (with oven, microwave, fridge, toaster and kettle). On top of all that are lots of luxury extras including a Smart TV and a smart speaker that can sort you out with mood lighting and a few of your favourite tunes. Of course, given how gorgeous the scenery is around here, you may prefer to spend a large amount of your time outdoors – and that’s been made nicely comfortable too with access to outdoor seating and a barbecue area (Lochinver, 10 minutes’ drive away, is the place for provisions – or for meals out if you prefer).

Quinag 1 bedroom camping pod

Liked: The location and the view was absolutely amazing!! The pod had everything we needed. The shower had amazing pressure. Lovely treat in the freezer for all of us. Made to feel very welcome by host and good recommendation for dinner. Everything was very clean. Good supply of towels. Private, easy to find.

Disliked: Very minor but the door needed to be slammed shut to close. Would not put me off returning.

Local attractions

Achmelvich beach (two minutes’ walk) is a fabulous spot for many reasons – as well as being incredibly gorgeous, it’s also renowned as a place to spot marine wildlife like dolphins and porpoises. There’s plenty of activity down here too, as the sheltered bays are suitable for fishing, kayaking and surfing as well as swimming. A short walk from the beach takes you out to Hermit’s Castle, a somewhat mysterious building constructed in the 1950s and often said to be the smallest castle in Europe. Also rather intriguing is Ardvreck Castle (20 minutes’ drive), which has been standing on the shores of Loch Assynt since the 15th century. As you may expect from such a scenic area, there are lots of places to get out for a good hike nearby too. Popular trails include those up Suilven (20 minutes), said to be some of the country’s best hillwalking territory, and the route to Bone Caves of Inchnadamph (half an hour), where various prehistoric remains have been found.
