  • Campsite on the West Highland Way between Glencoe and Fort William
  • Five minutes’ walk to Ice Factor; 20 minutes’ drive to Ballachulish
  • Vending machine, showers and drying room; pubs five minutes’ walk
A well-equipped campsite five minutes’ walk from the long-distance West Highland Way, Blackwater Hostel and Campsite is a very smart stop for walkers, climbers, mountain bikers, photographers… in fact anyone who wants to get out into Lochaber’s wild Highland scenery – whether for a night passing through or a longer stay to explore the region. Why so smart? Well, the mountain and River Leven views are spectacular, and the site is 15 minutes' drive from the coast at Ballachulish and located right next to Ice Factor bouldering and climbing centre in the middle of Kinlochleven. This may be a small village but it has all necessary amenities like a supermarket, fish and chip shop and three pubs offering hearty bar meals – thankfully within walking distance as the site doesn’t have a kitchen. Facilities, however, do include free showers with hand soap, shower gel and shampoo provided. There are toilets, power sockets for charging phones and two drying rooms with commercial dehumidifiers (always useful on the west coast of Scotland). A covered seating area has a vending machine for snacks, a washing-up sink and wifi connectivity so you can keep in touch with home. Dogs are welcome on site, but please keep them on a lead.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Lovely site for backpackers . Nice friendly helpful staff . There are pods to stay in as well plus the hostel itself. Nice flat grass to camp on benches to use . There is a covered outside area for washing and eating plus electrical charging there is a dry room , the showers are nice so is the toilet wash room . It is about 5 min walk to a small town with a co-op and pub. On the west highland path

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Facilities were clean and easily accesible, charging point provided for mobile phones and the staff were quite helpful when we arrived. Plenty of parking available and within walking distance to a Co-Op in the nearby town.

Disliked: The midges were unbearable, and although the campsite can't do much about this it just ruined the whole time. We couldn't even stay one night and ended up leaving as they were so bad. Size restrictions on tents can be very restrictive, and would have liked the option to have 2 seperate tents as long as they fitted into the size area given (we use mountaineering tents so they are very small). The ground was quite difficult to get pegs into, and there wasn't any assigned plots. Showers are seperate, but have a communal changing area. Very expensive for 1 night, £30.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: We liked the covered area where we could cook standing up. They also have an electric kettle for use by campers and a free device charging point and drying room. It was easy to find and a beautiful spot.

Disliked: Only the midges were a problem on one morning, but it’s Scotland so…
