  • Woodland escape next to a stream and the peaceful shores of Loch Garry
  • Just over a five-minute drive from Invergarry and 40 from Fort William
  • Firepit and fishing on site; ask about wildlife photography tours
Often find yourself on the verge of dropping all your daily commitments and fleeing to the wilds of Scotland? Live out your fantasies – if only for a few days or so – with a break at Caledonian Cabins, approximately 50 metres from the shores of Loch Garry in the Highlands. Picture the scene: mornings spent out in the crisp breeze on the lake using one of the site’s canoes or paddleboards, lunches made out in the fresh open air on the crackling firepit and evenings snuggled up indoors on the antique furniture in your accommodation after a spot of fishing in the stream. Sounds dreamy? Just make sure you have plenty of grub to see you through the hol by stocking up on supplies at supermarkets in Fort William (40 minutes’ drive) or Inverness (an hour and 15 minutes) on the way – the garage in the nearby village has basics for sale if you get stuck. When not huddling up amid the trees or on the banks of the lake, head off on walks around the stunning mountains, old moorlands and ancient lochs in the area. A gentle hour and a half hike up to Glengarry’s waterfalls and back down again starts around a five-minute drive away, and if you’d like a guided day out the site will put you in touch with a local ghillie for fishing, hunting and wildlife photography tours.

Local attractions

The beauty of a break in this area is being able to easily wander around the surrounding area in search of spectacular landscapes. But there’s enough stuff nearby to keep you busy if you prefer organised amusement too. Fancy a couple of hours with the clubs? Head to the nine-hole Fort Augustus Golf Club (20 minutes) – the nearby village also has a handful of recommended restaurants for post-game meals, like The Boathouse eatery with its lochside views. For panoramas from higher up, leap in a cable car and whizz up to the top of the Nevis Range (35 minutes), then come back down to earth for a look at the Loch Ness Centre & Exhibition’s displays on the myths and history of the famed lake (50 minutes). Another well-known structure sitting next to water is Eilean Donan Castle (also 50 minutes), a building on an island circled by stunning scenery at the meeting point of three vast sea lochs. Drop by the coffee shop here for a cuppa and a cake to sustain you through a segway tour and archery session with Glencoe Activities (an hour and five minutes) before retreating back to your woodland base for a rest.
