  • Glampsite with spectacular views over Loch Linnhe to Morvern and Mull
  • Fort William 15 minutes’ drive; Aonach Mòr ski resort half an hour
  • Daily housekeeping service; use of The Onich Hotel bar and restaurant
The wooden glamping pods in front of The Onich Hotel actually sit on a beach – yes, that’s right, there’s nothing at all between you and the calm waters of Loch Linnhe. Add to that a spectacular backdrop – the mountains of Glencoe to the east, Morvern and the Isle of Mull in the west – and you've got an extremely fine location in which to chill out while soaking up those views. Accommodating families of up to four on double and sofa beds, the stylish and modern beach pods all have their own shower, cosy living/dining area and compact kitchenette with cooker, fridge and basic utensils so you can be happily self-reliant in the catering department. Once you've rustled up your feast, take it out onto your private decking for a meal among those aforesaid stunning views. If alfresco eating isn’t on the cards, get yourselves along to the hotel for everything from breakfast to dinner (for an extra charge) – and don’t forget the bar, where you can sip a dram or two of whisky as you watch the sun set over the loch. No need to worry about tidying up your holiday home either, as the pods are fully serviced by hotel staff – daily housekeeping, towels and bedding are part of the deal here.

Local attractions

Anglers will be pleased to learn that they can fish saltwater Loch Linnhe right from the pitches. More physically challenging local pursuits include skiing at Aonach Mòr (half an hour’s drive) or Glencoe Mountain Resort (25 minutes) in winter, plus climbing, hiking and mountain biking in the Nevis Range (40 minutes) all year around. Harry Potter fans – or indeed anyone who loves a spectacular rail journey – can catch the Jacobite Steam Train from Fort William (15 minutes) to trundle over the famed viaduct at Glenfinnan. The Highland town is also the gateway to walks along the Caledonian Canal from Banavie (25 minutes), where you can admire the engineering marvel that is Neptune’s Staircase, with eight locks raising boats uphill between lochs Linnhe and Lochy. Take a boat cruise from Fort William Pier (15 minutes) for the chance to see seals basking on the shores of Loch Linnhe – and occasional dolphins, porpoises or ospreys. If you fancy going in search of Nessie, pretty Fort Augustus (an hour) has stunning views over Loch Ness, giving you a fair chance of spotting the elusive monster. If you don’t see him, console yourself with a visit to Ben Nevis Distillery (20 minutes) to sample some single malt.
