  • Well-kept glamping site on the NC500 five minutes’ drive from Dornoch
  • Glenmorangie Distillery 10 minutes’ drive; Achany Glen half an hour
  • Heated wooden pods just off the A9; restaurant five minutes’ walk
Experience a warm Highland welcome whenever you rock up at Evelix Pods, a bijou site with just a small cluster of cosy wooden pods on a croft, five minutes’ drive from Dornoch on Scotland’s east coast. Whether you’re staying just a couple of nights as you drive the North Coast 500 or lingering awhile to explore the Highlands and Islands region, you’re guaranteed plenty of space and mountain views. Sleeping a family of four in comfort, each well-equipped, insulated pod has electric underfloor heating, plus a shower, wash basin and toilet in the ensuite. The compact kitchenette comes fitted out with a microwave oven and small fridge, kettle, toaster, cookery, cutlery and glasses, and the dining area has a table and chairs. All bedding and towels are supplied. The pods have TVs and wifi, so you can keep up with what’s occurring in the world, and outside there is private decking for alfresco dining or just chilling in the fresh Highland air as well as private parking spaces. Peace and quiet are the watchwords on site, but handily Evelix Pods are also close to the main A9 (no tricky single-track lanes for you to navigate here) and – even better – just five minutes’ walk from the nearest licensed restaurant.

Local attractions

Five minutes’ drive takes you to Dornoch, an all-in-one holiday destination with a sandy beach safe for swimming, a championship golf course and a handsome 13th-century cathedral to have a nose around. Walkers can hike through woodland in Achany Glen (half an hour) to admire the fast-flowing Falls of Shin (35 minutes’ walk), and cyclists can make the most of near-deserted single-track roads to pedal to remote Loch Buidhe (three hours’ ride) – there’s bike hire in the middle of Dornoch. Nature-lovers will be pleased to hear that the mud flats and dunes of Dornoch Firth (five minutes’ drive) are rich in wildlife. You might get lucky enough to spot endangered ospreys flying over the water, while red deer, sea birds, seals and dolphins are more common sightings. Known for its rare orchids, Loch Fleet Nature Reserve (10 minutes) is also a haven for otters, and pine martens frequent the woodland bordering the loch. If you’re keen to taste some local produce, there are a number of distilleries on the local Whisky Trail, including Glenmorangie (10 minutes) and Dalmore (half an hour), which are both open for tours and tastings.
