  • Outdoor sauna on site; private bathroom and kitchen for each pod
The North Coast 500 road trip route is a gorgeous prospect – and one that surely deserves an equally gorgeous place to stay. And that’s exactly what’s in store at NC 500 Pods - Brora, a glamping site right next to the route and about five minutes’ drive from the seaside village of Brora. Check in here and you’ll be treated to a comfortable stay in an insulated pod that’s been thoughtfully kitted out with lots of luxury touches, including underfloor heating, wifi, a Smart TV and smart lighting. And of course, all the amenities you’d expect are in place: each pod has towels and bedding provided, and contains a private shower room and a mini kitchen with oven, fridge, microwave, toaster and kettle. All of this means you should be nice and cosy when holed up in your pod – but if it’s extra warmth you need, there’s another spot here that you might like to check out. A short walk away from the pods is an outdoor sauna, where you can get all steamy while looking out over the views of the lovely countryside that surrounds the site. That sauna may well also come in useful for soothing sore muscles after a good hike nearby – this part of the Highlands and Islands area is known for being home to lots of great trails through hills and glens or along the coastline. Golf, fishing, whisky tastings and castle tours are also close by for alternative days out. As for your meals, Brora village has a couple of handy shops, takeaways and a pub.

Local attractions

Unsurprisingly, the coastline here is pretty spectacular, so it’s well worth getting out for a walk on seaside trails from Brora (five minutes’ drive) or sticking around for some time on its beach, where you may spot dolphins or seals out at sea. There’s also a fabulous sea-view golf course in the village. For watery views inland, head to Loch Shin (35 minutes) for fishing or continue on to Falls of Shin (50 minutes) to spot the leaping salmon before a round of mini golf. More animal encounters can be had at Dunrobin Castle (10 minutes), which has daily falconry shows in the grounds of the largest private estate home in the Highlands. Make time too for a wander through the formal gardens and the main house, styled rather like a grand French château. And of course it wouldn’t be a Scottish break without a dram of whisky – handily, it’s only a 25-minute walk from your pod to Clynelish Distillery, where you’ll be able to take full advantage of the tours and tastings before buying a bottle to take back to your pod.
