  • Cosy wooden eco pods in the grounds of a family-run guest house
  • In the Cairngorms National Park, close to climbing and watersports
  • Central Aviemore spot a 20-minute walk to the station, shops and pubs
Get cosy in the Cairngorms National Park at Aviemore Glamping, a family-run guesthouse close to the River Spey with posh pods to pick from in its grounds. A little comfort to come back to is definitely what you’ll be wanting after taking part in outdoorsy pursuits, from fishing to skiing, in the Highlands and Islands region. Handily, owners Ken and Gill have set up the pods in a most convenient spot for accessing such activities, and they’re also within easy strolling distance of Aviemore town centre’s bus and rail stations, shops and restaurants (15 minutes). For making cuppas in your own space, a small kitchen corner kitted out with a mini fridge and tea- and coffee-making facilities is in each of the eco pods, plus the accommodation comes with an ensuite wetroom with a toilet and shower. Cooked and continental breakfasts can be sorted if you order a day ahead, and there’s a large firepit area for setting up a barbecue (or just warming yourselves by a blaze). A communal shed near the pods has a microwave, toaster and hot water boiler for times when it’s not quite alfresco dining weather. Whatever the temperature, fresh-air activities are plentiful in this scenic area – ask on site for advice on the best spots for climbing, walking and watersports (or gentler scenery spotting). If you’re planning to head up Cairngorm Mountain, the team recommends using the bus that runs up there hourly from very close by.

Local attractions

Get to grips with the local area by taking a ride on the Strathspey Steam Railway (10 minutes’ walk) before setting your sights on all the numerous other attractions and activities in this action-packed region. There’s the Landmark Forest Adventure Park, where the kids can get stuck into the climbing wall, highwire course, maze and rollercoaster (10 minutes’ drive), as well as the Cairngorm Reindeer Centre (15 minutes) for meeting and greeting Santa’s fave four-legged friends. Pick up the pace with watersports like sailing on Loch Morlich and Loch Insh (15 minutes), then gaze at the big birds in the RSPB Loch Garten Osprey Centre (20 minutes). Critters can also be seen in the RZSS Highland Wildlife Park (25 minutes), a 105-hectare safari experience and zoo. Keep an eye out for animals, like mountain hares, in their natural habitat too during roams of Cairngorms’ peaks, which transform into ski spots in winter (20 minutes). Whatever time of year you’re visiting, it’s always worth indulging in a little whisky at the Speyside Distillery (half an hour), which specialises in the spirit that’s synonymous with Scotland.
