Ledgowan Lodge Bunkhouse and Campsite: My tent pitched

General

  • Pitch up in the grounds of a country house
  • At the foot of Fionn Bheinn and central to several other munros
  • A 10-minute walk from the local train station

It’s back to basics with a difference at Ledgowan Lodge Bunkhouse and Campsite, where guests can stay in the grounds of a country house in the Scottish Highlands.

Ledgowan is a small self-catering bunkhouse in Achnasheen, central to several munros and on the North Coast 500 route. It sleeps five guests in five rooms, each guest having their own room with wash basin. There's a communal bathroom and kitchen as well as a dining area with TV, and the bunkhouse is fully centrally heated so is toasty and warm even in the cold wet winter months. (Please note that guests staying on the pitches don't have access to the bunkhouse facilities, except the shower, toilet and water supply.)

If you're travelling without a car it's worth noting that the folks at Ledgowan will even pick guests up from public transport, although as the train station at Achnasheen is only a 10-minute walk away it might be preferable to amble to the site instead and take in the local landscape…

Please note

    Disliked:

It’s not a campsite it’s a car park. When we arrived there were cars parked beside the electric hook up so we couldn’t access it until they moved 2 hours later. The car park is located outside the hotel restaurant so had no privacy. There is nowhere to fill up water or empty also couldn’t see anywhere for rubbish & toilets were closed. Wish we had saved ourselves the £33 & wild camped would have had more privacy. Do not recommend.

From the manager...

What a shame you didn’t take the time and trouble to come into the hotel and ask questions if you were not sure of anything, im assuming to must have popped into the hotel to check in though?

The toilets and shower are in the bunkhouse and that door is never locked, if you had gone and tried the door you would have found this out, also if you had of needed water we have a hose at the side of the hotel for you to use. We don’t have toilet waste disposal no, however we don’t offer or advertise we do. You could have wild parked yes, but you wouldn’t have had the security of the hotel or lighting and as mentioned the facilities were there for you im shocked you didn’t take the time to come and ask if you were not sure? What a shame.
Thanks

    Easy access

    Disliked:

When we arrived we actually drove past the hotel and was looking for the campsite, we drove back to the hotel and spoke to a polite and helpful gentleman mowing the lawn who told us the campsite was in fact the hotel car park. Personally for us we didn’t like the fact it was next to the steps up to the bunkhouses. And whilst you could park a bit further away from the steps you were still parked opposite main windows of the hotel restaurant, felt uncomfortable having people eating their meals whilst looking out at you, and vice versa. I’m not saying there’s anything wrong with this place but it wasn’t what I was expecting. personally for us it just didn’t feel like a campsite more like a hotel restaurant car park, which left us feeling exposed and uncomfortable with the lack of privacy. We chose to stay elsewhere as for us it didn’t feel right. We didn’t use any of the facilities as we didn’t stay.

Local attractions

As well as fishing available on site, Ledgowan is close to a range of Highland highlights including golf, horse riding, climbing and mountain biking.

The village of Achnasheen has a studio gallery and café, and can be used as a base for exploring most of the Highlands from Kinlochewe and Gairloch to the west, Lochcarron to the south west and the glacial deltas of the Achnasheen Terraces to the south.

The site is within easy driving distance of several mountain ranges including the Torridon and Fannich ranges, and the mountain Fionn Bheinn is on the doorstep.

Cycle hire is available on site for those who prefer to explore on two wheels, or if exploring by foot there are several longish walking trails around the area. Attractions such as the Official Loch Ness Monster Exhibition and events including the Ullapool Guitar Festival are about half an hour’s drive away, or if you want to stick closer to home, there’s the option of doing what many visitors to Ledgowan do, and zipping up the hill on a quad bike…

  • Urquhart Castle (29.5 miles)
