  • Stays on a Fife organic farm 20 minutes’ walk from Falkland Palace
  • Five minutes’ drive to Falkland Hill; 40 minutes’ drive to St Andrews
  • Quiet family site with an organic café, farm shop and plant nursery
Whatever type of accommodation you choose at Pillars of Hercules Organic Farm, you’ll be in easy reach of Scottish countryside, with views over the Lomond Hills. This site is just one the edge of the historic forest-filled Falkland Estate, so you'll be able to get straight out onto woodland walks from your accommodation. This relaxed spot has a splendid feeling of rural isolation, but it's easily accessed from the main A912 running between Falkland and Strathmiglo in Fife, for straightforward arrivals and getting out and about to the area's attractions. In good news for those who prefer to avoid cooking on holiday, there’s an outdoor café on site, serving up vegetarian and vegan dishes as well as organic cakes and soups. Otherwise, there’s a really well-stocked store right next door, with organic fruit and veg grown on the farm, as well as meat reared locally, groceries, beer and wine – or you can soon be in Cupar (20 minutes’ drive) to pick up supplies in major supermarkets. For a keepsake of your stay at Pillars of Hercules, you can also pick up home-grown flowers, bulbs and herbs at the plant nursery between March and October. Please note: the site owners ask that you respect the peace of the countryside and their land. If you’re looking for night-time entertainment, a bar or somewhere to play loud music, this is not the site for you.

What customers say

This is a peaceful and picturesque campsite with spacious pitches and beautiful views, popular for families. Guests praise the friendly staff, the excellent organic farm shop and cafe, and the on-site play park. Many enjoyed the fire pits and nearby woodland walks. While facilities are generally clean and well-maintained, some visitors noted they were basic or a short walk from pitches. A few found the site busy, and some pitches had minor issues with levelling.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked A very nice camping. Good veggie food and hot beverages at the cafe. A long walk to the toilets though - a pity it was all booked and we could not stay longer.

Non-electric hardstanding and grass campervan pitch

Liked Beautiful location with mountain views
Farm shop on site was useful, with cafe as well not that I tried it.
Value for money as very cheap to stay

Disliked Facilities were limited particularly showers and toilets, the gents shower room and toilet cubicle doors were jammed preventing use when I was there, leaving the only option of a single disabled toilet/shower which catered for everybody staying on the site.

Non-electric hardstanding and grass campervan pitch

Liked Cafe and shop

Disliked Layout of plots isn't clear. We paid for a hardstanding plot, but it was fully grass. The toilets were a little messy.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked Excellent site in a picturesque setting. Fire pits are a nice added touch for the kids to toast some marshmallows!

Disliked I booked via pitchup and was therefore not aware that the cooked breakfast in the cafe the next morning had to be pre booked the night before so worth making others aware of that if you fancy the cooked breakfast! Other smaller options were however available to order on the day.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked Wonderful campsite which had large plots and never felt crowded when busy. Very family friendly. The shop/cafe is a nice addition and our kids enjoyed hanging out in the small park. The firepits were a nice touch and we used ours every night. Toilets were clean and well-stocked. There are some lovely walks into Falkland estate which we really enjoyed.

Disliked The toilet block is a little bit of a walk from the campsite (although there were a couple of portaloos on the field for emergencies!). Showers had plenty of hot water but not very good pressure and could be improved.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked Cafe with nice fresh organic food, lovely play park for kids to play, good size pitches, lots of walks starting from Pillars, Falkland palace very close. Nice camping field with lots of space between tents

Disliked During the week the road behind the campsite is getting busy, not extremely busy, but you can hear cars passing couple of meters away from your tent- there is a fence and some bushes between the field and the road so safe for kids, but not as peaceful, my recommendation is to book pitches further away from the road.Omy two portable toilets on the campsite - wish there were more, there are good toilets and showers by the cafe, but longer walk especially when kids want to go to the toilet 'now'.

Non-electric hardstanding and grass campervan pitch

Liked Loved the gardens and play area. Lots of space and things to keep the little ones occupied. Such a lovely, family orientated campsite. Very reasonably priced. Girls in shop very accommodating and helpful

Disliked We had not done our research and didn't realise the cafe was vegetarian, but that's more on us than the campsite.

Local attractions

A visit to Renaissance-era Falkland Palace (20 minutes’ walk) should top your to-do list, for its ornate architecture, formal gardens and real tennis court built in the times of King James V. After seeing the palace, amble up Falkland Hill (also known as East Lomond, five minutes’ drive to the car park) and be rewarded with views over Fife to the North Sea. The Fife Coastal Path (20 minutes' drive) is open to both walkers and bikers. Cyclists also have a route especially to themselves, as Pillars of Hercules is on National Cycle Route 1, a massive trail linking Dover with the Shetland Islands. To see more of Fife, take a driving tour of the East Neuk’s seaside villages of Elie (35 minutes), Anstruther and Crail (both 45 minutes, and all with tempting harbour-front pubs). Stop off in university town St Andrews (40 minutes) to see the cathedral and castle ruins, or let golfing aficionados take a guided tour of the famed Old Course. If you fancy playing on these championship links, be sure to book a tee-off time well in advance.
